49ers Rule The Bay Area; Domestic Violence Talk Trumps Sports On KNBR; Ted Robinson and Larry Baer; KRON ND Pero Screaming And Yelling, (Again); Radnich Says Another Stupid Thing; Tolbert Wants 500 Grand; More Haener, Less Gasia; Daffy Duck Gets KCBS Traffic Gig; Friday Notes First Take

FRIDAY NOTES AND THOUGHTS

*All the talk about domestic violence in the NFL trumped the normal sports-talk minutiae --moreover, it virtually wiped the Giants, A's and Warriors off the sports domain --indirectly, KNBR, its second biggest client, the Giants, were virtually ignored on the radio for the entire week.

The conversation centered around Ray Rice, domestic violence, the 49ers and Ray McDonald.

It only reinforces what's been known a long time but rarely discussed: in spite of off-field issues and the Giants winning a couple World Series, the 49ERS are the #-1 team in the Bay Area. It's not even close.

The Giants are a solid second and while they hold all the clout at 55 Hawthorne, it's the 49ers who have virtually all the cachet in town even if the Giants seem to get the bulk of favoritism including priority on 680 AM time slots versus albatross 1050 AM. Enter KGO-AM into the frame.

*Not particularly losing sleep over Ted Robinson's suspension: Giants Prez: Larry Baer. Relationship history: Fire and Ice.

*At KRON: the yelling and screaming news director, Aaron Pero, is doing a lot of yelling and screaming, AGAIN, from one of my KRONvicts who points out this behavior is nothing new coming from Pero who's angry at the world, KRON workers in particular except a certain female buddy in the morning who conveniently has been left alone from the ranting and raving, what a coincidence.

*Raj Mathai and Jessica Aguirre --Dan Ashley and Ama Daeta: a 1 and 1A battle between KGO-TV and KNTV, slight advantage to Ashley and Daetz but Mathai and Aguirre are coming down the stretch fast and furious.

*Hard worker in the morning: Laura Garcia-Cannon at KNTV--get her that contract renewed.

*Julie Haener and Gasia Mikaelian: chick wars at KTVU. Personally, I don't see why Gasia is such a big deal at 2 Jack London Square--what, the blond anchor quotient not operational? Haener can come off as impersonal and robotic but she's a solid co-anchor with Frank Somerville and they both have a bit more chemistry.

*KTVU graphics update: "Wei-Still- Suk."

*KPIX: the geniuses in upper suit department, taking advantage of NFL Thursday Night Football, decided to simulcast the horrid "Night Beat" on both PIX and KBCW. Great. The show still sucks.
"GAME OFFFFFF!"

*Veronica De La Cruz: from the penthouse to the outhouse. And the hair has little to do with it.

*Someone who looks like something but mysteriously isn't: Katie Marzullo.

*Tom Tolbert is quite happy at KNBR where he rules the afternoon in spite of the 467,000 commercials per hour that Knibber runs, just be advised when Tolbert's contract is up, he's apparently looking for a $500Ka-year payday which would make him the highest-paid yapper at the Bleeder. You can buy a lot of pop tarts with that dough.

*Speaking of yelling and screaming: Sarah and Vinnie at CBS' FM outpost. He, (Vinnie), still can't fathom she's the #1 yenta and he might as well be the line cook at the Emeryville Denny's.

*Yeah, I hear: Daffy Duck is doing traffic reports at KCBS. Traffic: KCBS' version of radio porn.

*A KGO Radio 30-something staffer on Kevin Metheney, (Pig Virus)--"He's actually kind of a nice guy." Yeah, until a year down the road when he's gone and screwing up another radio station in another town. Pig Vomit is what's known as a radio retread which is a Cumulus virtue when it comes to the Opps MGR at KGO---WNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNBC or not.

*PIX managers and middle managers alike: you didn't lay any of them off? Editors get no respect.

*Vern Glenn: Enough of the histrionics Vern, just give us the damn sports and cut the little guy doofus shtick, it's unbecoming and quite annoying, please.

*Alan Martin: For god's sake take a deep breath and laugh a little--you're beginning to enter into the Milt Kahn territory.

*Classy Radnich the other day on Knibber: "You know, my first wife--'we were married for 23 years and she never worked." He continued: "And the 23 years since our divorce she's still not working." Proving once again Gary Radnich is pretty much an asshole.

Glad Lieberman has said his issues with Radnich are not personal.

    1. Agreed. Rich is blinded by personal hate. He actually called Sadnitch an asshole because Sadnitch paid tons of money in alimony!? I guess Rich would've preferred Sadnitch not pay his ex-wife anything? Rich you're officially a moron. Go ahead and censor this instead of having the balls to respond...

    2. As Quest Dibley used to say: "BAD KNOWLEDGE!" to both of you. Of course he's referring to Daniel Dibley. Does anyone know if he still resides in the lovely Montclair District? I used to see him around in the past. Not lately.

    3. Local fans might want to know that HGTV has been re-running a renovation episode of Dibs and his wife Chandra's Oakland home. They did a fine job taking the D people's bungalow and making it look spiffy.
Maybe he used the increase value to move on to bigger or better.
His wife has really nice legs.

  3. You're dead wrong about the Niners being more popular than the Giants. Yes, they certainly were in the 1980s and through the 1990s, but that changed once the Giants started to win consistently after moving into Pac Bell, and the Niners stumbled and fumbled their way to mediocrity under John York's clueless ownership. The Niners got some cache back in recent years, but two World Series titles trumps whatever they did recently. There are also a ton of SF fans who are really pissed off about the club leaving the city to move to the suburbs and the south bay. Jed York was not truthful with then-SF Mayor Gavin Newsom about the Niners intentions, (he had said he was willing to work with Newsom on a new SF Stadium in Hunters' Point.) Of course the city of Santa Clara went out and bent over backwards to try and get the Niners to the south bay, offering all sorts of incentives and freebies, and York naturally took their deal. But they are NOT the SF 49ers anymore, they are the Santa Clara 49ers. The only SF team left is the Giants, (until the Warriors move back over to the right side of the bay), but the Giants are clearly the area's most popular team.

    1. I'm talking TV/radio RATINGS.

A 49ers game typically will draw 4x the numbers that a Giants game will.

This Sunday night the 49ers will be on NBC SNF--if Giants-Dodgers were the ESPN game, it wouldn't even be close.

I'm not saying the Giants are inferior to the 49ers --just the 49ers RULE on TV/Radio where it counts most: numbers and money. Even with off-field issues, NFL is still KING and 49ers are TOP banana.

      Delete
    2. very true Rich regarding ratings of one 49er game versus one Giants game, BUT Giants are playing practically everyday whereas the 49ers are once a week. Much more content with Giants broadcasts. Add up number of people watching, listening to Giants every week and the numbers are much closer (as are probably the ad numbers). Sort of like saying the 49ers average 70,000 per game where the Giants average 40,000 - but add up 40,000 six times in a week and you have 240,000 fans watching the Giants. Either way agree that football in general is king and 49ers and Giants are 1 and 1A in the Bay Area.

    3. "where the Giants average 40,000 - but add up 40,000 six times in a week and you have 240,000 fans"

      You don't think it's a different 40K per game, do you? :)

      Delete
    4. No I do not, nor do I believe it is the same 40,000 every game as a season ticket holder (2 seats) I attend an average of 1 to 2 games per week and sell the rest. Put another way, the Giants total regular season attendance is 3,200,000 compared to the 49ers 560,000. Doesn't mean Giants are that much more popular than the 49ers, just shows that numbers can be worked to fit different conclusions.
Maury Brown did a piece for Forbes.com on local TV ratings for baseball.
      Brown wrote:
Major League Baseball is king during prime time at the regional level thus far this season for regional sports networks (RSNs) winning the key prime time slot in the US markets that Nielsen Media Company tracks.
The data bolsters the position that baseball continues to be a solid programming choice for networks in the summer when the major networks are in reruns.
According to the information from Nielsen, of the 29 U.S.-based clubs in the league, 12 of them are the #1-rated programming in prime time since the start of the season in their home markets, beating both broadcast and cable competition. That list includes the San Francisco Giants.
With solid ratings and full houses at home I am just saying the Giants are in the discussion with the 49ers as far as Bay Area sports leaders.

    5. >>You don't think it's a different 40K per game, do you? :)<<

For argument's sake, let's say it's 20K of the same people each game (highly unlikely) and 20K of different attendees. In a 6 game week, that is 140K different people. If you spot them 30K of the same fans per game, that's still 90K discrete attendees (30K + 6*10K). You'd have to have more than 34K of the same tuchases in the seats every day for the Niners once a week 70K to outdraw the Giants.

I'm not being a partisan here, but that's the simple math.

  5. As to the last item and Ted, Of course KNBR didn't suspend him. They didn't suspend the A-hole when he came on air and said "Sterling was set up". KRON and Pero didn't suspend him when he took that view to TV later. No black groups outraged?...or when he called Sam's "Toxic" to the NFL for being gay. His fault-lol. Gay groups didnt make a peep.
And what he has to say about Asians,Obama,.offending left and right.?...Nothing. Local groups must think...
He sank to "Senile clown" territory to not even move their needle.
Oh,and he's perplexed by why Giant fans hate the Dodgers. He's convinced he's so well adjusted he's not into that-lol. Yeah, its all pretend about Sports. He knows that! A genius!

      2. Unhealthy is one way to look at it-lol. I tried like Rich to let go and almost felt sorry for the sap....you know, that display he and Cathy do. And then Radnich just eggs me on by doing MORE of what I wrote about. Its his natural jerk response.
Hey- Rich said that he and Radish head buried the hatchet,in person or on the phone- something like that...and not a week later - totally out of the blue on KNBR- he launched into a "I threw Lieberman a bone and he's now "my friend" said with dripping sarcasm. I could add some other zingers he gave his new friend, but that's enough . So,what was that all about? Crazy.
He invites the heat. So,Raddy, stay warm.

  10. I agree with Rich on Niners vs. Giants. Winning two WS helped the Giants, but the NFL is more popular than baseball overall and you just have to look around at how much Niners gear is worn around the Bay Area vs. the Giants. Also, go into any sports bar and see who there are more photos and posters of - Niners or Giants. It's easily the Niners.

  15. Agree on Niners over Giants. I forgot about baseball the second football started up, and all you have to do is watch ESPN to know the rest of the country has as well. Besides, 8 months and 162 games is just too long to withstand the KNBR/Giant's marketing barrage.

    1. But the stretch run and playoffs is when baseball really gets interesting. If the Giants are in the playoff mix, they'll get a ton of coverage. Especially on KNBR, where every game is broadcasted.

    1. He's got his orders. Pig Virus is doing things behind closed doors and on a need to know basis. It doesn't matter if you are a host, engineer, receptionist or janitor - if you don't NEED to know his next step you won't. Until he's handing you an empty box and asking if you need security to "help" you move your crap out. It's like one of those big domino displays - it takes forever to set the damn thing up but only one quick flick of a finger to set it all in motion. By this time next year you all will be calling him a genius.

    2. I doubt I will be calling him a genius. Maybe moderately successful and damned lucky, but not a genius. I've watched his track record. The only thing that marginally impresses me is his ability to move from one job to the next. Other than that, I am not impressed.

In this industry you end up working Holidays, weekends, nights, and when Gasia does, she actually organizes the station potluck to make those days a bit more palatable for the ones who are away from family on those occasions. That's why she is such a 'big deal"...to all those "unimportant" folk anyway.

  19. From a TV perspective, football (and the Niners) are king...it's event programming...16 regular season games. From an actual attendance perspective, baseball (and the Giants) rule. Baseball tickets can be obtained, there's 81 games, and you can get tickets at a reasonable price (well at least relative to the Niners). The percentage of 49er fans who actually attend a game has to be fairly small when compared to Giants fans. True comparison....local ratings for the World Series (TV+radio) vs. the Super Bowl. Super Bowl wins, but locally I believe it's somewhat close.

    ReplyDelete
  20. -- Obviously the 49ers are the most popular team in the Bay Area and receive a lot of attention on KNBR. But the Giants play a lot more games than the 49ers and all of them are broadcasted on KNBR. So that's why it gets priority over the 49ers during the baseball season. KNBR needs to promote it's biggest asset during the season. The Giants season will soon end, leaving the 49ers as the only team playing.

-- It seems as though there are more commercials during Tolbert's show than Radnich's, so I assume Tolbert is providing a lot of value to KNBR. Although, I do wonder how much KNBR gets from CSN for their simulcast. I think a surprisingly large percentage of Radnich's audience comes from TV. A lot of people work from home and his remixed show during the evening is popular as well.

  21. What's all the hate about regarding Vernon Glenn? He's been working hard and doing a great job covering sports in his unique fashion in the bay area for over 20 years. There is always an undercurrent of sarcasm and mean-spiritedness among many of the posters here, and I find that really sad. It shows you how unhappy some people are and how they have to constantly run others down to make themselves feel better, I guess? Look, you may not like Vern's style on the air but he's a good guy, doesn't take himself too seriously, has fun and has been around here for a long time. While now all of this sudden hostility and where is it coming from? There are admittedly plenty of other on-air people in this market that you could skewer including Radnich, Darya, Fatty Fitz, Ros Brooks, Murph and Mac, 'Amy G,' (what kind of a putz calls herself 'Amy G' anyway), John Lund, Jeremiah, Ric Bucher, Kate Scott, and 'Daffy Duck' among others. But Vern isn't in that low-rent district.

  24. ah!..Lowell and Rod Brooks squared off on Yahoo. I would say its the best back and forth I've heard on that show since DelGrande and Ratto in 2008. If the show was on then..whatever..Today was great showmanship. Rod brought on the "Don't treat the black man as a child" type of 'tude..and Lowell sort of embraced the challenge of being labeled racist..by putting a stop to that, with "I am not,I'm giving you what you never get on KNBR- a real argument" All this my interpretation of what they said, not word for word. Both were huffing and puffing air, when Korzimor broke it up.
    GREAT!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ha!...Larry Kreuger and friends did a segment on this. I can see Kreuger's points..Kap's playoff wins, his 75% winning percentage. I can see Lowell's side..Kap has lost so many late games by failing to get the TD,his inability to throw running left..and yet he does force that over and over..
It was when Kreuger ripped Lowell for asking the questions, and for working over Rod Brooks AND Krueger claims that Lowell makes it personal. I don't know,I didn't hear Lowell say anything about Kap's Mama. Or Rod's. Pretty much all on the field or in the interview room stuff. Now, 94.7 did question why Kap can blatantly advertise those stupid looking giant headphones. A good point.
Anyway's Kreuger doesn't like Lowell is well known,so going on about personal isn't holding water.
