Billy Beane Is Toast Of The Town In Bay Area/National Sporting Media; Moneyball Oakland GM Pulls Off Blockbuster Trade for Oakland A's

Billy Beane didn't have to do a Billy Beane for fame and adulation in the Bay Area and national sporting media--he already has a movie among his credentials.

But a movie and Brad Pitt is one thing and a World Series is another.

With the A's picking up two prized starting pitchers to an already heady pitching staff, the move by Beane is not only the talk of the local sporting scene but indeed the entire nation.

Except on KNBR. I forgot.

So, I'm just thinking: say the A's go nuts--kick it up a notch and go to the post-season and win a World Series?

Moneyball 2 anyone?

  1. Damn! I wanted the Giants to pick him up.

  2. A's go all in...Jeff Samardzija is nasty, just ask the Giants...Meanwhile, Giants "insider" and KNBR report Giants are still waiting on Pagan and Scutaro...good luck on that.

  3. KNBR will probably give this as much attention as the A's actual flagship station. Listen Monday when The Game's angle will be "how does this move by the A's affect the Giants?"

  4. Since Brad Pitt will play Beane again, who will play you? ...

  5. I wonder how the Giants will like facing Samardzija again next week? He already handled them once this year...

  6. KNBR sucks. KNBR is biased. KNBR is an example of how $$$ controls this country. They tell us what we think we want to hear. We have minds of our own. That's OK. They'll have Amy G kissing someone's ass in the stands during the next home stand. They'll focus on the garden in centerfield. Anything but the team between the lines. After all, it's not about the team. It's about entertainment!

    1. Someone pointed out they're a marketing firm that owns a baseball team. Hit it right on the head.

  7. Incredible Trade!! With this, Ive almost forgiven BB for trading Carlos Gonzalez and trading for Matt Holliday. Almost.

    1. Meanwhile, at AT&T Park,

You have Baggs, Rags, missed tags, batting averages on the sag and ERAs on the lag, Kuiper smoking a shmag, and fans wondering how this season has suddenly turned into a drag.

  8. You are pointing out the absolute worst aspect of KNBR. I grew up outside of Philadelphia, went to grad school in Chicago, lived in Los Angeles, and now reside here. I've lived through many sports stations. KNBR is the only one that pretends the sports they don't cover don't exist. It is completely asinine. And when they're forced to, they act like, "okay, lets mention that other team for a moment...moving on..." Never heard anything like it. Meanwhile, 95.7 does everything possible to court Giants, Warriors and Niners fans. I really want to see the Giants and Niners tank just to see KNBR go with it. This isn't even a Cumulus issue at this point because it's been bad for so long.

  9. Hey Rich your buddy Weintraub was talking about the A's on KGO last night. Saying he doesn't care if they move away but that he's a fan! Which one is it?!? I don't know how he keeps getting away with bashing Owens on the air either. He does it nearly every show and no one is saying anything? Probably because no one listens!

    1. Love listening to David Weintraub!
It's a very positive step in the return of KGO to Talk-Radio.

  10. In Giants news, Amy G reports that Panda and Baby Giraffe hats will be discounted 25%...I just love seeing idiots (adults) wearing animal hats...

  11. The Oakland ballclub gave up a lot for these guys. They are giddy in Chicago.

    3. Giddy over giving up 2 quality starters for Straily (he sucks) and 2 prospects? Yeah, whatever, the A's (the Oakland ballclub) just made themselves favorites to win the World Series, while the Giants do nothing.

  13. The amount of stupid being spewed in the Cubs facebook page comments for the announcement is beyond ridiculous. People keep hanging on to the delusion that Samardzija is an ace that could be built around when he's at best a #3 pitcher nearing 30 with a contract soon to expire. I think he has another year left, but it might be an option year.

The Cubs made out like bandits with two top prospect and a young, high upside pitcher, and the A's got exactly what they needed in rotation depth, since Shark and Hammel can immediately be plugged in the A's 3 and 4 slots.

    2. Apparently a lot of Cubs fans do not agree with you. I was listening to ESPN radio for a while last night and most of the tweets that they read from Cubs fans were very much against the trade.

  14. In the short term this is a great trade for the A's. Samardzija will really help the team out, hopefully holding off the Angels. Very important to win the division now, all the wildcard teams have one game playoffs--much too risky. He won't be signed after next season (the A's can't and won't afford him), Beane will 'flip' him towards the trade deadline for prospects like he has done in the past or as many think in the offseason for prospects. With Parker and Griffin coming back from Tommy John surgery they can't afford him plus he has very good value depending on how he does the rest of the season and playoffs.
Russell was a very good player the A's gave up for what looks to be a rent and trade guy. Billy McKinney seems to have a good future too. Straily is just a .500 guy.
This year, A's win. 2015 and on the Cubs come out on top.

    1. Those poor A's owners are just scraping to get by. Don't know how rich Lew Wolff is, but I'll bet he hasn't eaten at the soup kitchen recently. His A's partner, John J Fisher, has a net worth of 2.9 billion. Yes, billion with a "b" (per Forbes, as of today). And there is an "a" in cheap.
