Ask Rich Lieberman 415 Media Monday

  1. Is it becoming imperative that on-air media personnel participate on Facebook and/or Twitter?

    1. Yes, of course.

Too bad their TV/Radio ports are doing the same. Maybe they don't like their product and use these "social media" because they have nothing to report.

  2. On July 12th, you projected a possible 90-day lag before hearing on-air changes at "KSFO Morning Show."

Katie Green was off today. Brian barely survived without her mediocrity to offset his inferiority.

What is underlying reason for Cumulus' delay in termination and replacement of intolerable "talent"?

    1. Sussman's show and ratings have deteriorated to the point where a move will be made eventually, certainly by the end of the year.
Cumulus brought in Kevin Metheny, (Pig Virus), for these type of personnel moves--this one is probably first on his checklist.

As for why it hasn't happened sooner, you need to have someone to hire as a replacement before you pull out the guillotine.

  3. Rich, When are you getting a more permanent Radio gig on KSCO? Last Saturday Special Show you hosted was good.

  4. Gary Radnich took a shot at you this morning.
He said and I quote "if you want to insult someone, write a blog".
    Any reaction?

    1. He's sort of feeling threatened lately and therefore panders to cheap shots.

Lord knows I have enough dirt on him but I'll save that for another day if any.

  5. With your reports of Larry Beil wanting to work back in Hawaii and ABC-7 wanting to interview Ibanez, who do you think will be the lead sports anchor over there at the start of 2015?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think Larry wants to go back to his native Hawaii and do sports, hence KGO talking to Mark Ibanez. Given the uncertainty of KTVU once Fox takes over, I'd say it's 50-50 Mark goes to Channel 7.

  6. Any podcasts you listen to regularly?

  7. Is Jessica Aguirre in or out at NBC Bay Area? I'm assuming Janelle Wang will take over her duties should they decide to not renew Jessica's contract? Seems to me it would be smart to keep Aguirre around for another 3 years to solidify the team and establish continuity.

    1. I think she's IN as long as she works at their price, that's up to her but I like Jessica and hope they can both work it out.

I also like Janelle too but I don't think she has Jessica's name or status, no knock just being honest.

    2. It will take longer than that to get Janelle ready to "take over" for Jessica. They should hang on to Jess as long as possible...

    3. Jessica is toast. She was fired by Kevin Keeshan at KGO, now he runs the NBC O&O's. Keeshan "hates" employees ( like Jessica ) who actually have a backbone. Keeshan has done more to F-Up Bay Area TV than Lee Rosenthal!

  8. Does ratings trump talent? And how long should an outlet keep trotting out good talent until pulling the plug?

    1. Yes, ratings are king.
Your other question I don't get.

  9. What's the status on KGO Radio format and on air talent changes?

    1. As I've said here probably before Labor Day. August is a dead month.

  10. Why does Cumulus keep hosts with terrible ratings on the air in San Francisco? I've read here that Owens, Savage, Levin and Sussman are all doing terribly, yet there's no sign they're going anywhere. What gives? And do you have these numbers?

    ReplyDelete

    1. No other than it requires a lot of money to pay top-notch TALENT and Cumulus don't pay shit.

      Pretty simple.

    2. I don't think it is fair to lump Owens, Savage, Levin and Sussman together. Don't know about their ratings, certainly Ronn is better than Sussman, although he is not as good as he use to be, but he still does a good interview. I don't care for Savage personality, but he is definitely bright enough, and sometimes entertaining, even if your politics are to the left of his, which does not take much. I love it when he calls John Bolton a lunatic (Bolton for the most part is a favorite of the right wing)at least he has some independent thoughts. Sussman and Levin in my book are both terrible, I don't know how Levin got on radio with his voice, even if I like what he was saying I don' think I could stand listening to him. Sussman is a total buffoon, his show is a joke, Katie Green is annoying to no end, the way she keeps saying "yeah, yeah" and her voice, almost as bad as Levins.

    3. As a fairly new addition to the Bay Area, I can tell you why. No one's mind here is going to be changed...by anyone. The inherited money crowd believes what it believes. The over credentialed and over educated crowd believes what it believes and controls the political narrative here, and that's it. They run the place. It is their play toy, always has been and always will be.

The angriest, most shallow, fearful and bitter people I have ever met live in the SF Bay Area. How do they keep those elements from negatively manifesting themselves in other ways? Money - serious, scary money.

    4. Rootvg-I have lived here for 30 plus years. You nailed it. The people here are the worst. Give me a New Yorker any day.

  11. Why does 910 not take phone calls for 9 continues hours, and they call themselves local talk? Alan Colmes is their only good talk host.

    1. I'm thinking maybe Clear Channel forgot to pay the phone bill.

  12. what's with Barbara Simpson? she's even been scrubbed
    from WND now...

    1. She's in hiding and having kowtows with Ben Fong Torres.

    2. What is "1:30 PM" talking about? WND still carries Barbara Simpson's columns. In fact, her latest column on the death penalty posted yesterday.

  13. NASA predicted last week that within 20 years or so we would find evidence that we are not alone in the universe. Do you feel that when this discovery is made local anchors will report the story from the Walnut Creek fountain? Or do you feel they'll report from either Chabot Space and Science or the Lick Observatory?

    1. Oh, easy, Walnut Creek fountain with comments from 2 White women, an Asian guy, and a Black professor.

  14. Why do local news pay 6 figures to sports reporters like Ibanez and Radnich for 3 minutes of talk over highlights? I'm a big sports nut and and I don't know any of my fellow sports buddies that tune into local news for sports. In fact, I don't even know anyone with a casual interest in sports that tunes in specifically for sports.

Wouldn't the money be better spent getting another reporter out in the field or, better yet, open up a Walnut Creek bureau. Preferably one near the fountain.

  15. Are Dinovite and Texas Superfood the samething?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I wondered the same thing. They, certainly, seem to have the same advertising agency.

Appealing to the Google Gods, I found that Dinovite is HQ'd in Kentucky, and Texas Superfoods (oddly enough) in Texas.

I suppose that doesn't preclude them from being the same concoction being hawked as two separate entities.

      I'll pass on both.

    2. Dinovite commercials always leave me feeling nasty. Even the sound production is unpleasant, scratchy background noises, scratchy, mumbled comments. The only things I do understand them saying, when the pet owners describe their dog's condition before this food. STICKY, GOOEY, SMELLY....eek! That's what stays in my mind the most. All the voices are either muffled or poorly recorded. Even the dog bark at the 'tail end' of the commercial sounds like a recording of a recording of a recording. I suppose that is meant to make it sound more authentic. Please Dinovite, update your
radio spots.Remove the STICKY, GOOEY, SMELLY asap, because people may wonder, is that how my dog will be after dining on this stuff? I'll pass.

  17. Is there any chance KNTV would do some kind of a channel swap with KQED to get a transmitter location on Sutro Tower? Would KQED be precluded from such a deal by some provision of any Sutro Tower agreement?

  18. After snot gate we now know Heather Holmes carries tissue before every live shot. I'm curious, does she also use an industrial fan to blow on her during live shots? Almost every outside live shot has her hair blowing in the wind. Makes for a sexy look for sure.
