Tuesday 415 Media Dot Dot Dot Dot Dot

 TUESDAY TIDBITS...

KCBS, firmly #1 in the AM radio market domain has made a mini-alteration to its sounders and it's pretty good...Carolyn Johnson, when she's done reading over at KGO-TV, is headed to LA's KNBC in some major news-anchor position to which I believe will be significant, like multiple news blocks presence--I'll give you specifics when I get my info...Not only did KGO lose one of their major personalities--they also lost a woman who was immersed in medical news and health-related content that is a major source of viewer interest. Keep in mind Johnson, a Stanford grad, had developed a keen interest in reporting on and gathering all the major breakthroughs in cancer research, aids-awareness and the like. That's a specialized talent difficult to replace...As good as Johnson is, yes, of course the ABC Broadcast Center will survive--it's just that an anchor of Johnson's talent and presence isn't as easy to come by as one would think. Combine the fact too that Johnson is in the middle of her prime and to lose that type of individual is a major blow to both KGO and the Bay Area...Yeah, have you noticed ALL the various KGO talents that have been gobbled up by NBC Bay Area, (like Jessica Aguirre, Terry McSweeny, Janelle Wang, and now, Mark Matthews, the latest, he a political reporter). No, it's not a coincidence all those were hired by ex-KGO News Director, Kevin Keeshan, who is now Senior VP of News Content and Standards at NBC in NY. In fact, it was Keeshan who directly hand-picked Matthews for his San Jose gig...Don't for a moment assume that the new anchor at Channel 7 will be a woman. For one, KGO doesn't exactly have a woman anchor in place that could fill Johnson's shoes. Cheryl Jennings is too old; (sorry, I'm being honest and blunt); Kristen Sze is considered "not ready for primetime", (according to station sources); Ama Daetz is holding down weekends but I would bet she might be the clubhouse leader...Yeah, that was some helluva Clear Channel- mid-management munchies over at a tony downtown restaurant. Seems someone was really, really, really, outraged that KGO Radio had a higher, (2.0), rating than "Talk 910". It's real simple here: when you actually discover that hiring bland pintos like Frosty the Snowman and Gil Gross ain't going to get you anywhere you deserve the worst and 910 AM got the worst. Even more disastrous: Gross really doesn't care and Frosty is so lost he just told another story on the air --psst, nobody's listening!...Brian Murphy made audio love with Larry Baer on KNBR Tuesday morning. Orgasms galore. Even the female interns were excited...Speaking of KNBR: their obnoxious commercial overload might actually help The Game and its new programming, particularly Damon Bruce vs. Tolbert in the afternoon...Jon Carroll and cats, it's orgasmic!...Leah Garchik makes Rob Morse look like Hunter S. Thompson...Two guys in black suits walk into Tadich last week, ask for booth in back, "immediately." Place is packed, as usual, fellows are told 30-minute wait but "we'll take care of you." Fellows insist that's way too long and flash KRON cards. At that point, wait is more than 40 minutes and I'm not kidding...One of the town's biggest PR figures, a very attractive 30-something female: trying best to parallel- park her BMW, (she waved off helpers), over at Original Joes--the result was visually mind-boggling as the Beemer nearly hit 3 tourists and chopped a huge portion of cement off Union St...Kate Scott is Jewish. Brian Murphy asked her, and I quote, "What's that Passover thing--is it an 8-day affair?"...Murphy is what we mishpuchah refer to as supreme goyim. Probably puts pineapple on a pizza and uses mayo on a pastrami...Yeah, Allen Martin has been vacant from the KPIX 5 PM anchor seat. The same seat next to his good friendLiz Cook. I heard vacation but then why then did Martin suddenly halt his vacation and return last week for a token appearance? Bad look, according to a PIX source --those of you in denial, yeah he still hates her, but he's been told to try to fake it...."Powlie", Murphy's lap dog, the guy with the fake Jersey accent, married someone named "Liz"--how do I know? Cause Smurph mentioned it about 680 times. Back to your soundboard, dude!

  4. You may be right about the others, but Jessica Aguirre was most assuredly not hired by Kevin Keeshan, who, along with then-GM Valerie Staub, were here bosses at ABC7 when she was fired by that station. Wang left the station to go to KNTV when the same twosome found her wanting in the anchor category. But timing what it is, the Keeshan/Staub duo now find themselves running NBC O&O's and they have clearly decided not to screw with mediocrity.

Raddy update: He's going to Miami for the rest of Wed- Sun at least. And I guess his xenophobia is true..he's never gone out of country. Hawaii is as close to Europe or Asian as he's been.
And you need to stop picking on KNBR. Paulie and Bobby and Gary and Tommy are of huge immense talents that keep their jobs because of overwhelming superior intellects and wit. Other sports networks and channels are filled with lesser talents.
No wonder KNBR never has any turnover. The on air talents, that's what it is..

Regardless of the fact it appears no-one reads or comments on his blog...is Stan in fact a genius? The other day people were talking about being sued for libel. Someone mentioned that labeling yourself a blogger protects you in that regard. With all the crazy stuff Stan says about all the people he says it about, is he really smarter than we think?

Yes, Stan is a genius, in his own mind.

There's a good reason that no-one reads or comments on his blog, No one cares what he has to say. Here at 415 Media he draws comments, even if they are negative.

    2. So I guess the intelligence or context of the show does not matter, as long as you agree with the host. I thought talk show was about controversy, I loved listening to Gene Burns, however there were many times I did not agree with Gene, many times I did, but even when I didn't agree I could not turn the dial because Gene made it so interesting you were hooked, and the more you and the callers did disagree with Gene the more interesting his show became. Gene had integrity, he did not spin, but stated the facts, and then his opinion. Lots of news now are just spin including Fox, if you think they are the holy grail of news you need to do some fact checking of your own, if you have the guts. I don't always agree with Christine, often I don't and I at times find her annoying, but she knows her stuff, and for the most part her shows are interesting, even if I disagree.

    5. 12:53 and 12:56 I'm not registered anything, and if I was so what, I like independent thinkers including independent talk show host, I don't care if they are liberal or conservative, I like them to be intelligent and interesting, I'm not that interested in listening to someone who I agree with all of the time, there is no mental challenge in that. Obviously, you have problems with a diversity of opinions, there isn't much liberal radio around as far as talk shows go, and it sounds like you would like to get rid of the few there are. Most we all be in lock step. How boring.

  12. First thing on my mind is that as much as many of us really enjoy hearing Christine Craft - we need to get it through our heads that *** she does not want *** a permanent spot on KGone. Period. She enjoys filling in. Second thing on my mind: I actually do, periodically, listen to Karel on week-end KGone - maybe just to see how badly he does. But - I'm done. It doesn't matter WHO is on the air with him (a news person, weather person, GUEST - whoever), he does not let them get a word in at all. He is ALL ABOUT HIMSELF - and it's really bad radio. I know of no other talk host who so constantly talks about himself - and it's boring, bad radio. And my last (?) thought - completely unrelated: Does anyone remember, and / or know what happened to - Suzanne Shaw? From the 80's, I believe - KRON? I really liked her. Perhaps she retired..................

Why doesn't someone buy KSFO and assemble the old team? Craft/Rothman/Taliafero/Wattenburg and Ward when he gets out. Ray T can make Savage look like a Nun, Dr Bill was much better when he was yelling at the idiots too. We miss those off color logging woods idioms.

    3. Yes, I'm sure many of us really enjoy hearing Christine Craft just like we really enjoy reading comments from Stan.

    5. ...and both are older than dirt. Christine Craft will not get full time on KGO, and is a utility player, not even part-time. She's desperately living in the past except when filling in for free for Karel on his baby or internet station or two. Anytime KGO "finds" new fill-in talent and passes her over, it has become painfully obvious. Christine is not relevant as a broadcast host anymore..

    7. Had to drive from the Peninsula to Concord today around noon time, and since there isn't much choice that hour of the day, I decided to listen to Michael Savage for as long as I could stand it.
His program had technical problems, he could hear himself talking (echo) he was not in the studio. He was a total asshole, berating the engineer, saying he was in the toilet and he had 1 second to fix the problem, yes 1 second, not 1 minute, and if it was not fixed in one second he would turn a tape on the best of Savage. He kept kvetching, about the engineer, and KSFO saying they don't know how to do a syndicated show. What an ass. I have listened to talk radio for many years, and once in awhile these things happens, usually the host, laugh, say something like "hang in there, and we will get it fixed" in the meantime lets do a few commercials. Not Savage, he has to belittle the people under him, and the station itself. How long are the big shots at cumulus put up with this rude, self indulgent egomaniac??? There comes a time where someone like that is not worth the trouble, no matter how much money they bring in. I just don't get why so many people listens to this rude person, even if they do agree with him?

  13. for clarity's sake...I love filling in at KGO...whenever they need me, be it sporadically or more regularly...As far as talk show hosts talking about themselves, who doesn't? People in broadcasting,at least in my experience, generally all have bigger egos than the average person. How else could you even think anyone else would be interested in what you have to say?
I had the great pleasure of working with Suzanne Saunders(pre shaw)She and George Watson were in love and so neat at that time(KSBX Salinas 1974) I'd love to see her again! She was naturally gorgeous, great athlete, Stanford-educated, and nice. This is very rare combination.
For 11:19, I do, very much like Hillary Clinton and so do lots of people. I'm not a democrat. 14. Hah! Lots of good input re Suzanne (I had forgotten the "Saunders" part!!), and from Chris Craft :). I don't disagree re talk hosts talking about themselves....but Karel does it to the nauseating extreme. Certainly, if a host contributes a personal story now and then, relevant to the topic at hand - okey-dokey. But Karel will literally ambush the prevailing topic and conversation to narrate a personal and often unrelated and boring story - seemingly to somehow glorify himself or gain sympathy or whatever. As I said - I'm no longer listening to him....

  16. What we all use to love about KGO was not the hosts alone, but rather the callers thought provoking ideas and interaction with the hosts. Some of the best radio on KGO was when a host and caller vehemently disagreed and argued things out on the air. If Talk 910 wants to help itself, they need to bring back this formula that made KGO such a success for so many years, until that station was destroyed. Four hours of any "talk" show host, even those I considered my personal favorites, with no callers and the only talking done by that host, is incredibly, incredibly boring.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I so agree! Gene Burns was the ultimate "when a host and caller vehemently disagreed and argued things out on the air". He LOVED that scenario - and was so very good at it. And it wasn't theater - he would be genuinely riled, and only calm down after a break, or a few more callers. But (for the most part) he was courteous throughout (unlike - I really hate to even mention his name again - Karel, who *** continually *** interrupts and cuts people off, so they can't contribute even if they want to). Sadly, I don't think talk radio will ever be what it was - and certainly not on 810. If 910 could even remotely bring back that format - and get more wattage so we could tune it in clearly - it might possibly work.

      Delete
    2. You are so right, when several hosts were fired from KGO 910 picked up Len Tillem and Gene Burns right away. Gene had a stroke and then a second one and was never on the radio again (our loss) they had several hosts filling in for Gene, John Rothman, Ed Baxter, Gil, for some reason the picked the most boring to fill Gene spot, and then expanded it an hour, and then he stopped taking calls, it went from bad to worse to a total disaster as far as interesting radio goes, then the brought in Frosty, who might be all right if he took calls, don't know what management is thinking, don't know who they are trying to appeal to, but their ratings should tell them something. I have a feeling they are not listening. Gil is a tad better than Brian Sussman, as is Frosty, mostly because they are nicer people, and at least Gil is a bit brighter than Sussman.

      Delete
    3. Here's the problem: Like the dearly departed Gene Burns AM radio is dead and getting "deader". It's not about 910's "power" -- it's about their legally mandated directional antenna in an area with horrid topographical problems. With development building as it is, and man-made interference, AM is not the medium it once was. There are many more radio stations than once were and lots of building, population and more that has wreaked havoc with AM radio. Will it come back? No. Can it all move to FM with translators? No. The signal will be more limited. What was once ok is now antique. Can 910 raise its power and change it's directional antenna? No. If it could, it would cost much more than could be recouped in revenue.

The key? Internet streaming over terrestrial "towers and transmitters" broadcasting. Problem: While it is rapidly becoming "the newest thing," advertisers have not discovered, yet, the abilities of internet streaming, making each station a worldwide entity. Why? Because the signal is available via computer, smarthphone and tablets and not everyone is "hip" enough to the technology.

To that, the older AM listener is passing, the younger generation born with cellphones and computers in their hands rule. With what AM radio technically sounds like, that form of broadcasting is on it's way out, no matter how a company invests in programming costs and technology. Radio as we "knew it" is on it's last hope. FM is not immune due to it's line-of-sight abilities to cover a market. AM radio is an unheard of and "unacceptable" medium to most people under 45 years old today.

Even the government can't fix it and with newer technologies, would rather let a dead dog lie. Don't get excited about the "AM renovation" talk. It will take forever to do and as the internet and smartphone technology grows, AM will only become even more "a thing of the past.".

      Delete
  17. I agree with you (7:32 PM). Without callers, any talk show host will have a hard time keeping it interesting. The callers were the best thing about the old KGO. But it takes hosts that RESPECT good callers and don't constantly interrupt or cut them off (Karel has cut off so many that I don't know why anyone would call him!)

I feel badly that Gil Gross has to go four hours with no callers. It's not fair to him or to us, the listeners. I have to believe they have been given the mandate to take no calls. But it makes no sense to me. Live radio is better because it's live and unpredictable. Taking callers away (the most unpredictable part of talk radio) makes it way too predictable.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Totally agree. Some of the callers had more enlightening information about a topic than the actual experts had. I enjoy listening to Tom Sullivan. Like in the old days at KGO, sometimes the caller's contribution deepens the topic even further and takes it in directions the host could never have programmed. It was like that yesterday in discussing the bus/truck accident tragedy last week. A trucker called talking about the particulate filters recently required on California diesel trucks. Said they generate extreme heat and cause parts to melt and could explain no brake skids and reports of the truck being on fire before iit crashed. This is the kind of calls that KGO would get sometimes and to me are much more interesting than all the experts consulted on shows like Gil Gross does now. These guys are just regular folks who have had the personal experiences. I enjoy their contributions. Also now these local shows on 910 don't stick with one topic for the hour - ever. They cover too much and consequently somewhat shallowly. It's very controlled and maybe that's why it gets boring.

For me, Forum on kqed is the only program left with hourly topics (usually) and callers. I wonder why 910 is so adamant that their local hosts both do the same format. They choose syndicated hosts that take callers and don't wander all over the place.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I posted the blog at 9:19 and I agree with you. It is not only that the hosts do not stick to one subject for long, and as far as Gil's show goes, since he is on at 3 p.m. many of his subjects have already been covered on the internet or on news station, and since he does not take calls, so it does not add to much to the subject. Like John Rothmann always say to callers, you are the most important person on this show. Gene use to say withouth you callers I would not have a show. However, Gil has a show (barely) and no callers, he might have a show, but he has no ratings. So as far as I can tell he does not have much of a show.

    2. You are certainly entitled to believe that having a great education is a bad thing. To declaratively state a simple positive fact about someone is not an effort to "minimize the education of others". For example, I went to UCSB. That's not a bad thing, and the proximity to Rincon made it my easy choice. If I'd gone to Stanford instead, I would have had a tougher and better academic experience, not a bad thing.
Stanford is a great school and always has been a great school. It's very difficult to get accepted there for a reason. Apparently to you, going to a great school is something of which to be ashamed. Sorry, I just don't see the world that way. As Gene Burns used to say, "That's why we make chocolate and vanilla". We will just have to agree to disagree.

"In modern everyday English," the New Oxford American Dictionary says, "spinster cannot be used to mean simply 'unmarried woman'; it is now always a derogatory term, referring or alluding to a stereotype of an older woman who is unmarried, prissy, and repressed." The title "spinster" has nevertheless been embraced by feminists like Sheila Jeffreys, whose 1985 book "The Spinster and Her Enemies" defines spinsters simply as women who have chosen to reject sexual relationships with men." Christine, living in the past as you do will get you nowhere and that's where you are..

Oh, and saying what you did for the blog world to see "I am also"not out of legal practice is incorrect. 1) must have a space between the quote mark, 2) the word "also" is unneeded and 3) being married for many years is the past and does not count and no "closed quoute" at the end of the pithy statement says nothing for your typing or grammatical ability. I'd bet your were fun in a marriage. Go for a swim and cool off Esther Williams..

She fills in for Karel so much it his prissiness is "rubbing off."

    3. Wow the things I learn from 11:50! I think you should tell all the women in your workplace who are divorced, that you hold a derogatory view of their formerly married status, and that they are spinsters. Have you ever been married?
I don't know who your friend, Sheila Jeffreys is, not do I care that she doesn't like to have sex with men. She doesn't speak for me.
Finally,I've never heard of a "quoute" before, so I can't help you there. Didn't your mommy teach you the difference between "you're" and "your". It does make a difference, even if you don't know.

    4. Um, no, wrong again Christine. LMFAO! It was an intentional typo. The "your" was meant to be "you" ... as in YOU were fun (unlikely.) As for "quoute", um, I meant the French version or sumpthin'. Wow, you are sick. Perfect in your own mind, but strangely sick.

    5. Christine, a question marked is used to ask a question, like "... teach you the difference between "you're" and "your". Question mark, please. You boob.

    1. Yeah, doing "Stupid Pet Tricks." It was on his morning show which flopped on NBC before Carson picked up the show and pushed the night version to NBC. Johnny could -- and did -- do that.
