SF Media Late on Kaepernick Allegations; KNBR 'Gary and Larry' Get Sanctimonius; TMZ Report

We try to keep it media-related here, for the most part. Occasionally we'll drift to other more mundane matters but we know our place.

We also know the vibe and what's the topic of the day and here in this area, right now it's Colin Kaepernick and allegations about a "suspicious incident" at a Miami hotel.

TMZ reported it first. There's been several amendments and the Sac Bee and Matt Barrows, its 49ers beat writer has a more detailed account.

When the TMZ report first aired, KNBR's morning program, "Gary and Larry" briefly mentioned it and moved on to other topics. Sounded sort of disingenuous when Radnich said it would be a ratings grab to "go non-stop" on the Kaepernick story.

No, Gary, you're wrong. In today's environment you can discuss what is clearly on the Bay Area water-cooler circuit without sounding utterly phony and sanctimonious. Especially when it involves the most popular player of the most popular sports team in the community.

We stress again we're not indicting Kaepernick--we don't know the facts, obviously, and stories like this are almost a daily occurrence so until we get something more concrete, like facts, for instance, everything else is kind of murky.

KNBR wasn't alone in its curious time to acknowledge the report. SFGate finally had it a good hour or so after TMZ. And to their credit, KNBR finally had Barrows on for a phone interview talking about the story.

In a perfect world it would be great to sit back and not elaborate or, in this instance, under-report what is clearly on the minds of people and non-sports-minded people themselves are reading and discussing. So Gary and Larry's "let's be fair" mantra sounds sort of ridiculous. We're not making the inference too because KNBR happens to be the 49ers flagship station--that would be too easy and it's not right anyway.

We are making the accusation that this sort of selective reporting is not only the wrong way but, in Gary's words, not knowing how to read the room. There's ways of handling this and KNBR struck out today early on.

  2. Read the police report you Tweeted.

He had a prior relationship with her...she waits several days to report.

If charges are actually filed on k this is a story. Not even clear there's enough for that.

  3. What crime was committed?
I just read the police report and it fails to allege any crime being committed against the unnamed woman.

  4. Rod Brooks gets a hue.HUGE, Stan salute. Sanctimonious? Radnich said he would never want to be part of a club of all people like himself. ROD BROOKS, said what I have been posting for years now. "You do know your part of that club here?" said Brooks about all white KNBR and the bay area sports scene..
Radnich answer? "I lower my standards to eat" But,until Rod called him out ,he was spouting off like he isn't of low standards. Radnich going both ways as his method to never be wrong.
Rod said it.. KNBR and local sports media like 95.7 are racist, discriminatory. And did I,Rich Leiberman or not post on your very own blog that I knew that even a Rod Brooks would never say I was wrong? And a few times?
Dont complain about me or that stupid putkin putdown. Didn't he think he was a friend of Jerry Lewis? an admirer?
Do I sound like a friend of any of these people?

    1. Yes Stan, you seem exactly like the deranged, obsessive character Rupert Pupkin.

Your convoluted comments are incomprehensible and sound insane.

    2. Yeah? I never claimed to write like Hemingway..but your response is always the same, ignore I'm right and was right, and then say "incomprehensible" !.
Even to this..no mention of Rod Brooks statement,no, ignore that and attack me.

Readers know the game. I ask for proof I'm wrong..and you post insults.

    3. Rich, please do not ban Stan from here. There's no where else anywhere we can get this kind of entertainment.

    4. Shit Stan, where did you learn to write? From 4th grader? You are dumb as hell thinking you are always right. What a fucking moron Stan is!

    5. Stan=95.7 recently hired an African-American Man Troy Clarity(who did Stanford pre & post game basketball a few years back) as the Host of their 7pm-11pm Sports show right after Damon Bruce plus Troy does Home Oakland A's pre & post game shows. In addition Vern Glenn has been a fixture on Bay Area TV since 1990 & CSN Bay Area has Henry Wofford since its inception plus he frequently substitutes on 95.7. In addition Rod Brooks has been on KNBR since 1997. So Stan STOP with this Constant Bullshit about how the Bay Area Media is so Racist & Discriminatory!

    6. So 628 tell Rod Brooks he doesn't know as well you the playing field for African Americans in local sports radio for one. When he said its a club for white men? He doesn't know the truth like you.
Troy? Fine,he's been at it a week. Oh,you know so much.
Vern? Henry? They agree with me. I've heard Henry say as much, and he admitted its something he cant lose the job he has over. I understand that. And why I as a beloved bay area liberal don't feel constrained to tell people like you who name 3 people over the last 50 years as "evidence".
And the bay area is half Mexican American. How many of those have hosted sports shows? Been sports anchors? News Directors??? HALF of the bay area locked out 100%,100% of the time. THAT'S RACIST 100%..
And nobody will say it but me.
Oh,and all you who don't "comprehend"? Tell us the local person of color in the media who's quoted agreeing with you. Find it. Hell, ask Kate Scott too. Find one quote by a single one.

    7. Hey stanley, regarding your line about mexican Americans.

      Mark Ibanez...

    8. Nobody will say it but you, because you're the only one deluded enough to believe it...

    9. Hey 935,Mark is not Mexican American,he's not even Latino. Mark I think has tried to let people think that...but nothing in his background- like being born in Canada or that after decades..he has no wiki bio page, tells you he's not latin.
935, You say Rod Brooks is deluded about people of color in the media? Or- as my favorite line- There is no more discrimination? It ended in 1984?

    10. @Stan @8:54. Sometimes I enjoy Stan. Sometimes I comment pointing out I enjoyed his comment. I even went to his website and read a bit but didn't comment because I didn't want to have to make an account to comment and couldn't just go anonymous.

That being said, your comment is ridiculous. The majority of these "Mexican Americans" can't speak, read, or write a fucking lick of English. THAT is why they flock to Telemundo in droves. Btw you conveniently left out they have a station like TELEMUNDO dedicated to their asses. Chock full of nothing but Latinos. Is that racist in your eyes? That's what I thought. As Sussman likes to yell, "GET HIM OFF THE AIR", in my situation, "GET HIM OFF MY SCREEN".

    11. LET STAN HOWL AT THE MOON. It's great.

And I admit, I read his blog and sometimes comment. He and I argue about politics. But he puts his stuff out there. I disagree with 94.8% of it, but I love his passion.

just so we all know the rules up front.

  6. There was no sexual contact according to the police report. The woman went into a bedroom, Kaep followed and undressed her. He left, then Lockette and Patton peaked into the room, she yelled at them, they left. She had had previous consensual sex with Kaepernick, but they did not have sex this time.
This I heard on KNBR numerous times this morning. What more should they say Rich?
Rich Lieberman always looking for a conspiracy.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Rich Lieberman makes this same baseless claim, that the local media was late, about any local story. One minute late, two minutes late, it doesn't matter to Lieberman who MUST FIND SOMETHING to complain about.

And then he unfailingly implies that there's some big coverup involved.

Rich NEVER and I do mean NEVER, approves of anything the local media does.

  8. KNBR sucks. And let's get ahead of the curve, Comcast Sports Net Bay Area will also suck. They don't/won't have the balls to report this for fear that they'll get calls from the PR Nazis. Credibility and courage went out with last night's Montezuma Revenge for dinner. Right down the porcelain pot.

  9. thanks tatt man for a great topic today on the radio, filling for Karel...3pm www.thekdw.com. I've just learned here that stripping someone's clothes off, if done by Mr. Kapernick....is not "sexual"......I think I'll tie it effortlessly into a look at the Piss-torious trial.. Prediction..both men get off, so to speak, because sports figures , strangely, are worshipped and can do no wrong.

    1. Christine, you went to law school, a lousy law school according to the latest US News and World Report ranking, and somehow managed to pass the California State Bar exam. So please read the police report and tell us what crime Mr. Kaepernick committed.

  11. Many times I have accused Rich Lieberman of dishing out the dirt unnecessarily or going with a story when it was unwarranted.
But the behavior at KNBR this morning was a complete joke. NO way around it.
Gary it is OK to discuss what on the minds of Bay Sports fans.
When the Kaepernick story is on the front page of the Drudge Report it is a story.
Get your head out of 49erville and open your eyes.

  12. It sounds to me like Mr. Kaepernick -- doing a solid for his buddies, was playing engineer on the evening train and thought he'd prepped his lady friend sufficiently to pull it. What happened to her (did those two rascals return after she passed out?) is likely undiscoverable, but what the young quarterback thought of her is pretty clear. She was his to play with and pass-around; no more, no less. Who knows, maybe she sees it as a nice addition to her résumé.

I don't know which liberated young woman is next in his play-with-and-pass-around line, but you can bet it is a very long line.

Your 100% correct in your statement...This young woman obviously had a sexual past with Colin. Her mistake was putting herself in a situation, alone with 3 NFL players, and with one she "thought had her back, which he didn't. This young woman was just a friend "with benefits" to CK7, imvho.

  14. Let's see, a drunk and stoned girl with 4 guys. 2 she knew and 2 she didn't getting drunk and baked. She put herself in a bad spot. The 4 guys with one drunk girl were in a bad spot also. Taking the clothes off a drunk nearly passed out girl is sexual assault. No matter how the 49er PR machine spins this, he did something bad and put his self into a bad situation. The NFL should crack down on these guys and the reefer madness that is widespread throughtout the league.

If you think this behavior is ok you have something wrong with you upstairs.

Lots of easy women cling on to these guys, and good for them if they are out plowing the wild oats. Just what I am saying is this guy was trying to get a 20 million dollar contract and he is hanging out with thugs and trying to jump on passed out women,

Not a model citizen and probably not the religious guy that all the hype was trying to get us to buy into.

I was a huge fan of his at UNR, but his actions have led me to drop him like a hot potato.

  15. A big problem KNBR has is that they are such lap dogs for the local teams that when they actually do show some justifiable restraint, they have so little credibility that people over react to their "wait for the facts" stance. I wish they would realize how many listeners (or ex-listeners) are frustrated by KNBR's obsession with spinning everything positively. The Giants in particular seem more like a marketing machine than a team.

    2. Us sports fans are worse than KNBR when it comes to being in denial about our sports heroes. Barry Bonds was a steroid abusing Godzilla ? EVERYBODY WAS DOING IT. THE PITCHERS WERE DOING IT. IT WAS THE STEROID ERA. Sports fans are delusional. These stories about Kap, Smith, Culliver; 49er fans don't want the reality of it shoved in their faces. So for our local honks at the 50,000 watt blowtorch to walk on eggshells around these stories, it's what we want to NOT hear.

  16. While I disagree with the portion about reefer madness (as long as this sort of incident isn't the thing, I don't are if NFL players smoke), I do agree overall with your post. Especially "Not a model citizen and probably not the religious guy that all the hype was trying to get us to buy into."

  17. You can't just sweep a story like this under the rug and act like it never happened. Terrible move by KNBR. Granted what came out is marginal and we all know each side has its version of the story and the truth is in the middle, but this is the face of the franchise. Getting named in an investigation is not good press. Especially considering the problems Smith and Culliver are dealing with. Lesson learned for Kaep and you can't ignore it. This is the guy who is supposed to be the face of the 49ers for another 10 years. You have to question everything surrounding the story including his judgment or lack there of.
