A Life Lesson

You will never drag me down. Never. You will never, ever, make it impossible for me to speak and to convey my thoughts to my readers, all of them even those that do not like me but can come here and always depend on reading about media matters and subjects interesting to them.

You have tried to silence me through intimidation and innuendo. You have made fun of, belittled me, my friends and foes alike but they still keep on showing up.

Against all odds, I continue to produce. Not all of it is perfect by any means and sometimes I have the urge to just give up and surrender but I can't. My life is a little busy of late; just trying my best to navigate through all of it under less than ideal circumstances and add a little bit to the conversation. That's all.

Truth be told this is no diversionary tactic requesting sympathy or redemption. I had my day in the sunlight and have now figured out, belatedly, that there's far more important things in life than fooling around the relative triviality of some little media blog. Health is important. Physical, mental, all of it. This? This is what it should be and is. It's a place where you can hang out, all of you, a cyber bar to have a few and not have to worry about driving home when too many libations have been had.

Take the time someday, today for example, to tell the person you care for that you love them. Life is too short and unfair. Life is a luxury we often take for granted and only realize that when fate can take an ugly turn. We have no control over that. And when we're fortunate to experience life's upsides and its magic we take it for granted. Don't.

I had an epiphany. I wondered aloud what it would be like for all of us to realize how puny all of this is; how so much of it really, in the big picture didn't matter at all. Forgive me for ruminating about something you might not be accustomed to here just understand that this isn't life and death. I take it seriously and despite losing my shirt every day just trying to survive literally and figuratively, the biggest and most important thing is keeping it all, this, in perspective. It's a life lesson.

And ultimately, life rules, for better or worse.

  1. Wow, that was something Rich. I was actually tearing up because a lot of what you said hit close to home. You've been through a lot my friend, and there are many, MANY of us out here in cyberland who appreciate what you do and who you are. Don't ever forget that my friend, especially on your rough days. There are thousands of us out here in the Bay Area who depend on you to keep doing what you're doing/ So keep fightin' for us, okay Rich?

    1. Agreed 100%. There are more of us here in your corner than you think, Rich. You are right on one thing, it's more a community than a blog. I may not always agree 100% with some of the comments, but I do enjoy the interaction from everyone...even the ones that seem to get grief, Stan and that cute as hell Christine. Keep at it Rich, you're appreciated more than you know!!

    3. If you had listened to my recent outings at KGO,(last two weekends) you would have heard things that no one else had either discovered, or talked about. I explained what HIPAA was and why it bars hospitals in both the Lynne Spalding and Jahi McMath cases from saying anything involving medical records or treatment notes for either. In the McMath matter, I was the only one to point out that in interviews with both NBC Bay Area and the Merc, several family members admitted to using "suction" on this unfortunate girl, post operatively. This well could mean that they unintentionally caused the fatal bleed. No ICU nurse would ever allow family members to use suction on new incisions on a child. It could well mean that the hospital has zero liability in this case. I also had a wonderful guest on from the UK, not a publicist or lawyer trying to push for a big mega million dollar settlement with the city, but rather the twin brother of Lynne Spalding who was able to tell us, without artifice, who she was and what was troubling her at the time of her death. Do you only like to hear predictable things on the radio?

  8. Rich, You do this pity-oarty crap on a regular basis. Why? Donations down? Another bad letter from Karel because he has what you want and you can't have it? MZ still not committing to your act to bring you back. Despite your fans who come here to laugh and see your inaccuracies -- do you not think that many come here to laugh at you and not with you?

At your age, Rich, it's tough to get a real job. This isn't it for you. Could it be? Probably not, media as we knew it is dead. Look at radio which you tried to eschew. Hey, Big Vinnie, don't keep putting up with s#hit just to dish it out because you think you can. You have no monopoly and many of us are bored watching you slide into the underbelly of innuendo and undfounded basis. Your followers have done nothing to help you and never will.

If you put time into that which is a benefit for yourself, you'd not be catering to the Stan's and others of the blog world. You can't live like this, Rich, it's time to take stock and get real. 50 year old Tweeters and no-money blogging to get noticed and taken seriously isn't feeding you.

    Get a life.

    1. @10:44 Rich is trying to do something that most people are afraid to do--live on his own terms and make a living doing something he loves. We don't all have to work a 9-5 and be drones to some a-hole boss and work for some company that we don't believe in, doing something we hate. I don't see the harm in what Rich is doing. Plenty of bloggers have figured out how to make a decent living from blogging. Rich has a lot of active readers, he'll finally a way. I enjoy reading this blog and I would love to see Rich continue writing it if that's what he chooses to do.

    3. Christine, I take your point about "undfounded basis" but Lieberman himself came up with "the underbelly of innuendo." Rich may also have a great future in one of those bad writing contests.

He seems to be suffering from some terrible affliction related to his difficulties maintaining this blog.

    4. Christine: You're ust jealous you didn't come up with the "underbelly of innuendo" line.. As for "undfounded basis," I wonder if that was on purpose to draw you and your red pencil out because you are so slight on good opinion. You should only wish to go back to credible writing which others did for you. Touche'

    5. Actually I wrote a book. I was so delighted to win that book prize at Stanford. I've done several pieces for the Chronicle and other major newspapers and magazines, all by my little self.
I have never written radio shows in advance, either recently in the last two weekends on KGO or anywhere else, ever.. Did you think I did? Can't you always tell when a talk show host is reading something they've written and pretends to be just conversing? I always can. The best exemplar of that practice was Pete Wilson, who used little scripts, but pretended to just be talking
.As for many years anchoring and reporting television news in different cities,I always wrote my own copy. Who do you know who ever wrote anything for me? You? what have you written lately or ever?

    6. "Innuendo" is , by definition, something not explicit, something hidden and not directly declared. Is the "underbelly of innuendo" a sort of innuendo plus, an uber-innuendo? I think the words are tortured in this pairing. When you add "undfounded basis" to the equation, it becomes jibberish.

    1. Yes. Let's rid the world of no negatives, incluing valid opinion here, whether it is liked or not. Rich is far from perfect here. We have a right, as he does and as he shows, to be negative. The world is not made of lollipos, sunshine and true love. You know it. Keep the negatives. Much of those are the learning experience if taken properly. For those wo merely troll - stay away. If there was more accuracy here, there would be less negatives. Fact.

    2. No you don't, not unless there are huge improvements over the last effort. So why listen before? Hope, first. Then after the onion was peeled back, it was sad to hear what came out so it became even sadder. This will take a major effort to improve, considering it now goes from fulltime to part time. My fear is that it's a simple way to keep the tubes lit for lack of an interesting topic and something local that costs, like before, nothing.

  21. Increasingly difficult to take Mr. Lieberman seriously; alternately sky-high then depressed and defiantly self-righteous about who knows what.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Remember this post next time you decide to rip people and frankly make-up crap from one rumor that you allegedly heard somewhere.

You know sports and can do some decent analysis and critique on the subject, but when you devolve into bi-polar blasts against those of us into the business and then launch all out personal attacks against us, don't be surprised that we bite back.

Rich, I hold no personal hatred toward you, despite the numerous personal and honestly rather sad attacks against my character. I take you to task here (on the rare occasion when you publish my comments) and on Facebook when you are wrong or attack my co-workers or friends in the business and when you publish as fact unsupported allegations.

Be well, get the support you need and stop trying to use what should be a blog about local media into some kind of personal anger management program.

Pursue your interest in talk radio and master what you do well, but you do yourself and your readers no favors when you confuse frustration with your career with critique of those of us lucky enough and honored enough to work in the profession. Sincerely,
    Mel Baker

  23. Hey J. Hagerty...you're the tool! Sounds as if you're one of of the jealous ones who can't stand the idea of Lieberman roaring to the forefront of media significance here in our area, while you continue to live in squalor with a lousy job and an overbearing, bullying boss.

    1. I hardly live in squalor. I have had a long career in broadcast journalism at both the local and the national level. I have had great and lousy bosses as has anyone in this profession. 24. The only thing that stinks about this blog is the anonymous posting. You should have the guts to leave that option off until people find screen names. Who cares if comments are limited?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Obviously many of us care if comments are limited.
Rich could either publish all comments OR publish a representative sample of comments.

But when he picks and chooses which comments he publishes for the sole purpose of presenting himself in a more favorable light, he's being dishonest and that offends those of us who understand normal journalistic standards.

If Lieberman wants to say that he's a blogger, not a journalist, FINE, but please stop pretending to be one.

    2. It is worthy to note that your post is "signed" "dananonymous." I need hilarity like this. If Rich went to names only, his comments would dry up. I comment both with name and anonymously. If you had any guts, Dan, why don't you start a new trend and tell us who you really are. I'm sure the Bay Area media folks reading this are biting their nails just waiting to find out because you are so relevant to their daily lives. Thank you for the laugh, Dan.

  25. Rich, tbh, I like reading your column because it's entertaining. But, as far as I can see you really have OCD about KGO, the talk show Jewish guy on KGO (whom no one cares about really), the old KGO which no longer exists, the women you have big crushes on like Roberta Gonzalez, and then there's the sports stuff which is really really boring to me. But you vascillate between all those topics. I wish you've find some new topics. And agree with others who say that you seem very bi-polar to me. You have periodic meltdowns like this one.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't wish harm on anyone, but for as harsh as rich can be on others, albeit putting his name behind his opinion, he is overly sensitive about any criticism redirected back at him which is quite irritating yet amusing. But until he changes his ways, no reason to donate to his cause, the entertainment of his blog is fun but I wouldn't miss it if it was gone.
