KRON Staying Put at 1001 Van Ness; Ass-Kissing from 9-Noon on Knibber; The Biggest Non-Story; Damon Bruce National; Wednesday Media Notes

Media Notes and News Wednesday

*KRON was supposedly looking to move and sell its heavily-mortgaged building on 1001 Van Ness but now, according to one of my station sources, has put off the sale and is staying put, at least for now.

Might be the fact that the market is soft for a building even in prime SF real estate. Then again, KRON's corporate owners may be holding out hope that the market gets better or that some tech company needs more space and wants to buy the historic building outright.

*The constant ass-kissing by the bloated one from 9-Noon to his co-host is further proof of the giant ego's greatest liability: insecurity. Worse, his partner's complete 180 on criticism of the local sports teams is downright laughable. Larry Baer's noose is getting tighter.

*Add to the nauseating commercial radio spot list: the California lottery's endless Mama's and the Papa's "All the leaves are brown" dreck being driven down the throats of Bay Area radio. I hated the song when it first came out and whenever I hear that spot I begin to get nauseous again.

*The Warriors indeed extended their radio contract with Knibber last September but there are several out clauses.

*Caroline Tyler on KGO-TV: A good anchor and reporter with a great sense of humor to boot.

*I like the KNTV, (NBC Bay Area) news product and many of the people there in San Jose but seriously, name me any ground-breaking story; just one, that their celebrated, (and expensive), "Investigative Unit" break? Again, I admire the fact that they have an entity there and throw wads of money to such a project but the end result, (so far), is that the promos are more lavish and compelling than the stories or lack thereof.

*The KTVU tag line that even the anchors, (behind the scenes), are even mocking: Thanks for trusting us. Please, Mr. Raponi, seriously now.

*Can anyone tell me why the whole world has stopped because some fourth-tier professional "came out?" Wait a minute. The whole world didn't stop, just the media here in the US and more gullible oafs who drank the cool-aid. I'm a big proponent of racial equality, gender sexual orientation too, and so all this fuss is/was much ado about nothing. This piece says it all.

*The "Game": We're not KNBR...KNBR: We're not as good as The Game but we have 50,000 watts and the SF Giants. Bottom line: you're both dreck that is content-less.

*Damon Bruce is beginning to get national attention, (CBS Sports Radio gigs) which only reinforces the notion that he should have the chair at 680 from 9- Noon. The bloated one and his statman should be relegated to 1050ville.

*Da Lin at KPIX: Just awesome, dude.

*Would KRON do the right thing and hire back Tom Sinkovitz? He'd take the gig and the Bay Area would do well getting back a terrific newsman with a boatload of credentials and streetsmarts.

*Follow me on Twitter and listen to me from Monday-Friday, 1-4 PM PT on KSCO/KOMY.

Re: Damon Bruce; 'national attention' is specious at best. Bruce sounds like a guy who's never been in a fight in his life telling others to man up. When the Niners and Raiders fans got into it at the exhibition game, he actually advocated profiling as a means to stop violence. This mock angry, chickenbleep attitude comes across with nearly everything this guy has done; he's Jim Rome without the humor

  2. Who remembers Damon on KGO that time? That was funny.

  3. Damon Bruce is an ass. That's why no one listens to him. You can criticize people all you like but he's kind of a jerk about it when he rants. It's not 1050.

  4. There are criticisms and snarkyness about others in the blog today, bordering on name calling. Rich wouldn't do that, lest it come back to haunt him for what he does. Maybe Chef Ryan wrote it. I don't care.

    1. I wonder if Ryan considers Damon his boy.

  5. Funny. On heavy commercial rotation is "Christian Singles dating". I just saw an Investigation Discovery channel show where the serial rapist and killer found his victims using.. one of the various Christian dating websites.

  6. -Damon Bruce is the best thing in sports talk in this area and has since he arrived.

-That "fourth tier professional" is a 14 year NBA vet who has earned close to $33 million during that period.

-'California Dreamin' is a beautiful song.

In a 'hater' mood again Rich?

    1. I totally agree with you on Damon Bruce. None of the other KNBR shows are like his, even if you don't agree with everything he says, and it seems like every show that Damon has is informative, entertaining, and interactive. I also like how he normally leaves the first hour of his show for callers to call in.

I'm happy for him that he got the national gig on Saturday mornings on CBS Sports Radio. I'm guessing he kind of essentially replaced Brandon Tierney, because wasn't Tierney in the 7-11 AM Saturday morning timeslot, before they tried out Damon Bruce in that timeslot?

    2. Damon may be an acquired taste, but so is fine wine. He's not for everyone and that's ok. But he's the most original guy going on local sports radio here aside from Tolbert, who is a nice counter. No one I know would take Bruce second to anyone else in the market.

Radnich is an old, bitter queen whose time past a decade ago. Fitz and Brooks are nothing more than shills. Murph and Mac are just another generic morning show just like the bozos on 95.7. The other guys on 95.7 are just desperate, pathetic attempts at piss ass ESPN impersonations. To date, I've never heard any original insight on that station. It's always a regurgitation of whatever was said on ESPN the night before. Every show on that station is nothing more than a Helen Keller drawn caricature of of Around the Horn or any other fake debate show with ignorant hacks screaming over each other.

And speaking of desperate, pathetic, piss ass, ESPN regurgitation bozos, I give you Brandon Tierney.

  7. And,I wonder if Raddy is feeling healthy?..he's been doing a lot of looking a bit down. And that thing of sweating, and needing to take a break?...sounds like arteriosclerosis,or diabetes maybe.
He's also not as bloated as he once looked. Just in his boasting..but that's his usual self..

    1. Sorry Stan, Radnich is doing just fine in spite of all your wishful thinking to the contrary. I think someone else just mentioned what an annoyance your comments are and I whole-heatedly agree.

    2. What Raddy needs to do,is get out of those Eye-tie- lian loafers and get the sneakers on and take some walks. The man needs a dog. Add years to his sedate life...

    3. 1214 I'm sorry you think I wish illness on him. And,tell us how do you know he's fine?

Good point.. Just another example of mainstream media attempting to create as much drama as possible in order to to draw viewers/readers/listeners in hopes of higher ratings and sales..

    1. So why, then, is Rich harping, still, on the story like it's the story of the year already?

    2. The reason why this event is noteworthy is because no pro-athlete has come out while still being employed in the homophobic field in sports.

  9. Paul Deanno has cured his case of new market/new broadcast team jitters, he's now smooth, relaxed, and even a bit of a character. It was difficult to watch but now it's onward and upward(?).

Still trying to convince myself that 5's mobile weather isn't a solution looking for a problem to fix. Broadcast from the station OR the field, BUT NOT BOTH. UGHH!!!

Also, Dear Da Lin's mother, please stop cutting your son's hair.

    1. True 'dat about Paul. The guy's good and solid these days. RoGo on the other hand is beginning to look and sound like a caricature of herself - even with the WeatherWagon as a distraction she's just too strident to tune out.

Da Lin? Speak up. In fact, you could take a lesson from RoGo (but only one, please.)

  10. I like "California Dreaming" but I am getting very tired of these commercials.

I do think the athlete coming out was a signficant story....I got tired of all the hoopla around it, tough. I just tune it out...

Hey Rich, there's "Breaking News" and what is also irksome is the "Developing News" thing.

    2. What's up with these "Obamacare 911" commercial ads on KGO? Has KGO sunk that low that they're bottom feeding from 4th-rate advertisers?

Can't even get a "Floor Liquidators" commercial any longer KGO?

  11. And while I'm ranting, what's up with KTVU's "Storm Tracker 2?" I just watched the noon news where the only weather news is that it's getting hot and there is a little bit of fog off the coast. I am confused when I see "Storm Tracker 2" on the screen as they report today's weather. Is there a storm on the way?

  12. Are there STILL losers out there...holding their breath waiting for NBC to dump KNTV and re-purchase KRON ("Because NBC belong in 'The CITY'?")

  14. I totally agree with Rich, that Damon Bruce should be on KNBR 680. The only thing is, would he be able to do his same show if he moves back to KNBR 680 though? Either way, he needs to be back on the main KNBR station. He's too good for KNBR 1050. He's becoming too big for that station. Yes, it's nice that he can essentially say whatever he wants on 1050, but it's too quality of a show to be on that station.

I would keep him in the Noon-3 timeslot though. Even though I still miss Damon doing Sportsphone, he's done a good job in the Noon-3 timeslot on KNBR 1050. Yes, Damon should replace Gary, but I doubt KNBR gets rid of Gary or moves him to KNBR 1050, after the whole Ralph debacle. I'm sure Gary would raise a fit and/or have lawsuits against Cumulus/KNBR like Ralph did, if KNBR fired him, or moved him to KNBR 1050.

Larry Krueger is not that bad. Yes, he goes a little overboard on the stats sometimes, and players that no one has ever heard of, but that just shows you how prepared he is for his show with Gary. No offense, but Gary ruins his style. I think a Damon-Krueger pairing wouldn't be that bad. They work well together doing 49ers pregame, and 49ers postgame before they changed to doing 49ers pregame together. I think overall that would be a good show, even though Damon works better by himself.

Krueger needs his own show. Like I said, Gary ruins his style, and even though him and Gary get along, and their show together has worked so far, I don't think Krueger is into all the schtick nonsense, like Gary is. It's almost seems like at times that he has to do it because he's on Gary's show.

These would be my new weekday KNBR lineup changes:

If Gary doesn't retire, I would keep Gary on from 9-Noon, but I would have him agree to a smaller role, and I would move Rod and Ray Woodson to co-host with Gary. Rod got along with Gary when they did mornings back in 2000, 2001, and Woodson got along with Gary when he used to do updates for Gary's show. It would probably be a good show still with Rod and Ray Woodson being the main hosts, with Gary as the 3rd wheel. Gary is better in smaller doses. I would also bring back the Bruno segment, since it was so popular, and people still miss that segment. I would then move Damon to KNBR 680 from Noon-3. Then I would put Krueger back on Sportsphone. I would move Fitz to Damon's KNBR 1050 timeslot from Noon-3, unless the Giants are playing a day game, then I would have Damon do his show on KNBR 1050 on those days.

If Gary retires or re-signs due to the new lineup, then I would keep Krueger from 9-Noon, and have him host his own show in that timeslot, and move Damon to KNBR 680 from Noon-3, and put Fitz and Brooks on KNBR 1050 from Noon-3.

    1. I would move Bruno to the trashcan. Funny that Bruno many times said he wasn't a hater and much into politics...then when he was angry at Bochy, does he goes after Bochy's Italian heritage? (or whatever Bruce is) NO!..he goes after the latinos!! Cowardly bigot.
