Ysabel Duron retires from KRON; It's now 'KPIX5', KTVU 'Issues'; Radio News; Friday Round-Up

After 42 years in the biz--the last 23 of those at KRON, veteran anchor/reporter Ysabel Duron is retiring. Her last day is April 14.

Duron had a storied career and paved the way for several Hispanic journalists to make it into TV and radio. She's also a cancer survivor. Before joining KRON, Duron spent time at WMAQ in Chicago and  KTVU.

We wish her well.

*KPIX has officially dropped its "Eyewitness News" title and is now "KPIX5" as opposed to "CBS5".  I know, you can sleep now.

*KTVU has an issue. One of its more prominent anchors, (think weekend), would like a small raise and has been courted by the cablers, not to mention a local competitor. So either pay up or lose one of the more underrated news anchors in the Bay Area. My best guess is that said air talent will stay.

*Amaury Pi-Gonzalez, the 'Cuban Don Rickles' and who will broadcast the Spanish-language games for the A's, will be my guest on radio today at 1 PM to talk shop and a little politics.

*Another KTVU dilemma: a few reporters and longtime editors who don't want to leave just yet but the station heads might feel otherwise. One problem: one particular reporter, a Bay area vet, happens to be a lawyer and management doesn't want to mess with him.

*Yeah, I do love a good debate as long as I know who the heck I'm debating as opposed to some anonymous troll on the Internet. When your a serial poster and rip a lot under the pseudonym like "Fair and Balanced", pretty hard to waste time talking with a cyber puppet. Man up, ID yourself and we shall take the gloves off. Fair enough.

*For the Raiders to really right their ship off the field, they absolutely have to find an AM station with 50,000 watts to broadcast their games. The present arrangement is an absolute quagmire and they know it. The natural choice would be KGO simply because KGO could use something of value to listen to on the weekend as opposed to the circus currently on its Sat/Sun airwaves.

*Regular readers have bombarded me with e-mail as to what's going on with a certain play-by-play broadcaster who has been noticeably absent from many games. It's a family issue and I'll leave it at that.

*By and large, the radio/TV/Newspaper coverage of the Santa Cruz Cruz PD tragedy was first rate. TV coverage in particular where common sense trumped the natural thirst to "get things first." Well done.

*Follow me on Twitter and listen to me Monday-Friday from 1-4 PM on KSCO/KOMY

  1. I have been saying that Cumulus should go get the Raiders and bring them back to AM. The only issue with KGO is they cover the 49ers game during Giants season. But if I am the Raiders that would be my #1 choice, strong signal throughout Nor Cal. They could build around the Raiders and you'd also have KNBR talking up the Raiders on their airwaves by default. If your Cumulus you'd have-Cal Football, Stanford Football, The Giants, The Warriors, The Raiders, and The 49ers. Pretty good package to sell to advertisers.

  2. Put them on 1050. Case Closed

Also it is obvious the KTVU reporter & attorney you are talking about is obviously Tom Vacar...Why not just say it?

  3. The Santa Cruz Sentinal has done a wonderful job covering the Police shooting. With the way of printed media today it is nice to see them lead all media with this tragic story.

Rich, I heard your show yesterday but could not call in. I would like to give overall view of the gun situation in the US. I am originally from Canada and my father was an avid hunter which is quite common from where I grew up. We had an abundance of wilderness. I was never interested and have never owned a gun other than a pellet gun as a teenager.

Guns were common in the homes of friends and family and I assume are not hard to purchase but they maybe tougher than in the US although I think anyone who wants one can purchase.

I have a good friend who was originally from Holland. He says there if you want to own a gun you must belong to a gun club and the guns are stored there. We discussed the gun culture this week and we were trying to understand the difference between what our US experience is and what we know from our native countries.

Why do many in the US have such extreme views of guns? Why is there such a "need to be able to defend?" Why do people feel they need to protect themselves from the government? These thoughts do not seem to be prevelant in other countries.

We wonder if the fact that the US is such a militaristic country is the root of this feeling? There must be something different about how US citizens view guns as opposed to other countries but why?

I will say that my close friends in the US feel as I do. They more reflect the feeling that Canadians have rather than the people you see yelling and screaming about gun rights. I often wonder what percent of Americans feel like my friends do and what percent feel like the pro gun lobby. Maybe the pro gun lobby is yelling so loud they just appear to be the majority?

I don't think Canada is anti gun either but they definately don't feel as strong about gun rights as the US does. Why the difference?

The NRA says that the only answer to a bad person with a gun is a good person with a gun but how did that help the Santa Cruz officers? As the headlines in the Sentinal said "They didn't stand a chance!"

    1. Several points Don,

Gun ownership has constitutional protections while the tobacco industry has none (specifically).

The negative impact that tobacco has on society as a whole is far greater than the impact of law abiding gun owners despite the stiff sin tax applied to tobacco.

Many of the existing regulations concerning gun ownership/access aren't being enforced, is it necessary to vilify and criminalize owning a gun because the law enforcers find the current regulations inconvenient to administer?

The US political system is too dysfunctional to legislate any meaningful change that would find middle ground.

PS: I'm withholding comments(making a point) regarding the Santa Cruz shoot out of respect for the officers/families.

BTW~ Obama is a smoker and Feinstein is allowed to carry a gun.

      Delete
    2. I understand all that. What I don't understand is what makes the US such a violent society in comparison to other cultures. Your comparison with tobacco would be spot on if people with guns only shot themselves as smokers work hard to kill themselves.

I don't own a gun or smoke but rum..........

      Delete
    3. So to follow the logic; if Canada allows gun ownership but it is not constitutionally protected and the US has constitutional protection then one would assume if Canada added constitutional protection gun violence in Canada would soar? If the constitution is the only difference?

    5. I was fiddlin' with you a bit Don by reframing the objective...saving lives, improving the quality of life, reducing the impact on health care, doing the most good with the least effort. Tobacco is the low hanging fruit with no specific protection but evokes no emotion and when I see guns pushed to the front, it seems like the left is deciding who dies and who is saved.

To address your "why", I have a few thoughts but qualify them as useless due to the fact that I have time to blog. socio-economic factors, a judicial system that offers inadequate consequences, access to mental health care, many people (globally) have violent tendencies...thats the way they're wired.

Regarding guns specifically, the left makes a hobby hoarse out of the gun issue, the right makes a hobby hoarse out of the 2nd amendment, both lead to in inadequate control. Mexico has strict gun laws as does Chicago, the level of violence there is not proportionate to the gun restrictions. Take away the willingness and desire to pull a trigger and having one won't much matter.

      Rum....mmmm, good.

KSCO AM 1080, with the skillful direction of News Director Rosemary Chalmers, provided outstanding coverage of the terrible tragedy in Santa Cruz in which two highly respected local police officers were murdered in cold blood, a story that had a "personal" element for Rich who also chimed in with insightful commentary on the deplorable state of gun violence in America on "Lieberman Live" aired on KOMY AM 1340.

Rich: The overwhelming majority of your fans completely agree (myself included), which is why I strongly urge you to, effective immediately, stop posting the rants of the few Internet trolls and flamers who seek to inundate your blog with their senseless vitriole.

Tell them instead that they can direct their scathing criticisms to you by e-mail or meet you at one of your favorite Chinese restaurants in Oakland's Chinatown to discuss these matters personally--if they have the courage of their convictions.

I'm sure I speak for 99% of your blog readers in making this suggestion. Posting the rants of the Internet trolls and flamers only emboldens them in their foolish frenzy and for us it detracts from your blog. That's right. We're getting sick and tired of them!

    1. Thanks to 11:04 for saying what I've been feeling for some time now.

Just because some low-IQ troll jackass with anger management issues posts an inane comment that has no bearing on the subject being discussed, that doesn't mean that their inane comment has to appear here. One example is the trolls from the baggy-pants generation, who post sarcasm because some of us feel an affection for a longstanding TV show or media icon. These "life goes on... get a grip" comments have zero need to even appear here and waste we reader's time to even skim their semi-literate content and recognize it for the childish babble that it is.

Censorship? Yup! But the flow of the conversation gets considerably smoothed out and made more meaningful in the process. It's your blog, Rich. Screw 'em and their righteous anger, if you exercise your right to excise their vapid blather.

  8. Rich, it's about time you asked for donations. Seriously. I mean it.

Keeping your blog going is worth a dollar, or two, or five, if not more, on an a regular basis in order to sustain the excellent and unrivaled free coverage you provide concerning the state of the Bay Area media.

We need to keep independent bloggers/media critics like you in operation, especially as you take on the corporate media conglomerates that want to do you in. The same corporate interests that are doing their level best to destroy radio, including the iconic and once great KGO 810. Cumulus would love to see you disappear from the Internet.

So, I urge all of you who read this blog to give to Rich and give generously!

    2. Whoever told you that Ysabel Duron has a sense of humor was sorely mistaken. At this point she's an office pariah and is loathed by everybody she works with. Nonstop complaining, criticism and nagging but never pushes up her sleeves and bothers to do the work. Producers, reporters, co-anchors, management, etc. all hate having to interact with her. She saw the writing on the wall and did the respectable thing in this case - set a date and get out on her terms. Otherwise the next time contract discussions came up she was going to be handed her hat and kicked out the door. In her head she thinks she wasn't liked because she is always pushing for better quality and a more thoughtful show. In reality she's disliked because she's got a terrible attitude and is a huge pain in the ass.

    3. Mark Danon should refrain from writing such disparaging comments about his co-workers and colleagues. It's general knowledge that he twists words from his best friend, the news director, and spreads vicious rumor and gossip amongst the rank and file at the station. One to never turn a blind eye to trash talk, especially about his resentment for his co-anchor. One with a skeleton full of closets should tread carefully.

  11. Thanks for a Friday morning laugh Rich - putting "something of value" and Raiders in the same sentence. Even team management knows how much that team is valued, that is why they are going to be tarping off about 10,000 seats at the Coliseum, giving them the smallest capacity in the NFL.

  12. I second the comments from the person at 11:04. For that matter, almost all of the comments in this thread are thoughtful and appear to be well-informed.

On the subject of trolls and flamers, it is time for more selective editing of comments. When this blog began, I'm sure Rich was happy to get any comments at all. Now, there are more and more readers adding information and perspective. The trolls are an unneeded and unwelcome distraction, one that can easily be eliminated.

Newspapers do not print every single letter they receive. It's called editing. Rich should do the same and simply not publish comments that are not worth reading. It is his prerogative as the owner of this blog.

Rich has shown he can tolerate criticism, and maybe a flamer's comment or two can start a good discussion, but the continued pointless and ignorant abuse diminishes the value of this place to the reader.

  13. Rich is afraid of an honest debate which is why serious, critical commenters have been abandoning this site.

Instead of blaming people who post as anonymous, that has more to do with the very primitive functionality of this particular blog than anything else.

The most common approach is to allow users to register, come up with a unique identifier for how they chose to communicate, but still have a hard link to who they actually are in case at some point their true identity is required. That way everyone has an identity and there is a continuity about who they are.

Another big limitation here is that there is no nesting of comments. So there is only a long list, unintended list of comments following any individual comment. It becomes difficult to respond to specific comments without awkward references to date and time which soon becomes unwieldy.

Also problematic is the fact that comments are only posted periodically at random times, and often in big bursts. As a result, if A posts something in response to a particular comment, but B, C, and D, have already made comments that haven't been posted, A's comment can appear senseless.

Isn't it time for a blog upgrade?

OK, that's fine. If it's Rich's blog and he makes it clear that he's only posting affirmative comments from approving fans, so be it.

BUT, if he presents only a small sprinkling of dissent, selectively editing out opinions he dislikes, and at the same times presents the erroneous impression of an open exchange of ideas, then that's objectionable and dishonest.

It is clear from many comments here that Rich selectively edits which comments he posts and does so based on his agreement or disagreement with what is being expressed, not just because it's disgusting, illegal, or otherwise totally inappropriate to be published.

If that's his practice, HE NEEDS TO MAKE THAT CLEAR. Most other sites that have post exchanges between people, post everything unless it's just utterly offensive. They don't practice selective censorship.

Don't post their comments. Ignore them as much as possible, because responding to them – even with the best possible comeback – will only fuel the fire. Most trolls get bored easily if they are ignored. They will move on to other posts or sites to stalk their prey. If everyone keeps ignoring them, the chances of them rolling over and dying increase.

  14. Back to the gun issue for a moment. We are a society that promotes and covets violence. Look at the number of violent movies and TV shows that Hollywood churns out. Look at our history, the way Americans migrating west decimated the native American population with little forethought or conscience, look at the number of wars we've been engaged in, look at the number of violent incidents that happen in our country every day, look at the mass shootings that seem to be cropping up in every part of the country every other month. Need I say more about that?

Until America takes a good hard look at itself and realizes that we are a 'sick' society with messed up values and a country that doesn't value the family or long term relationships (personal and business), we are never going to progress.

People keep guns around, basically because they are frightened. Many don't trust our police to provide protection, so they feel the need to have their own safety net with a few 'defensive' weapons in their house. I understand this feeling. I live in a very quiet, safe, crime free neighborhood, and the other day, one of my neighbors was sitting in her living room in the middle of the day and some nit wit tried to break into her house with a crow bar. Luckily, she called the cops and the guy skedadelled, but the next day another neighbor of mine reported a suspicious vehicle driving down our street, stopping at houses to see if anyone was around as they cased the places.

What I'm saying is that I sympathize with those who want to keep their defensive weapons in their homes, and I understand the paranoia that is rampant in our society. It's up to us as individuals however, to repudiate the rootless philosophy that everything in this country is disposable: jobs, relationships, family, houses, etc. Until we come to grips with that and shrug off the nonsense that passes for 'entertainment' on TV, we will continue to be a troubled, dysfunctional country.

Why so unnecessarily mysterious about this guy. You've talked about him before and said he's Tom Vacar. Plus he and Fowler are literally the only two vets the station has left. Like all the other stations in the Bay Area, KTVU is no longer worth watching, and when these two go that will be IT, period. As it is, they don't use either of them much now.
