Gavin Newsom wants to be POTUS; Makes High-profile Appearance on Meet the Press

Gavin Newsom was on Meet the Press Sunday.

He's been doing a lot of TV and radio appearances. He has a book out and has been making a lot of speeches. Curiously, very little of his speeches has had anything to do about his current title, Lieutenant Governor of California. That's not a knock on Newsom--clearly, he has his eyes on the big job.

I think he eventually wants to be President.

When you write books, make speeches, and get a coveted appearance on Meet the Press, there's a mission in mind.

  1. Let me be the first to say: "Don't run, Gavin. Please don't run!"

You aren't remotely qualified in international affairs and your experience in California as mayor and attorney general is very thin for the challenges of the US presidency. How about prioritizing the job you were elected to do?
How about first serving the people of California? A run for the presidency at this point in your career would be a real act of vanity.

    1. You might be right but I suppose if Sarah Palin could run for vice president, Newsom can run for president.

    2. But she could see Russia from her porch!

    3. 9:59 , why are you questioning his grasp of international affairs?

Newsom, a talented orator, couldn't properly govern a city within the authority of the mayors office...in 2004 Newsom directed the County Clerk’s office to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in blatant violation of two existing state statutes, including Proposition 22, which voters passed in 2000 by strong margins.

      Cart before the horse.

    5. At least Palin won a top statewide election. Let's see Newsom do that first before comparing him to Palin.

    6. Mr. Newsom, who is not a lawyer, would be shocked to learn that he is Attorney General. He is better looking than one of those reality show participants, but he does look an awful lot like Scott Dipstick..yes?
If elected to the Presidency, he would become the first openly dyslexic commander in chief.

    7. Ooops! Of course he isn't Attorney General. I misspoke when rushing to state my horror at the idea of his running. Mea culpa. Thanks, Christine.

  2. I think Gavin would make a good President, but he will never get the nomination because of his strong identity with dear old SF. A lot of people are unfortunately scared off by San Francisco politics.

  3. Finally, Rich, a blog item that has me rolling on the floor in laughter. Gavin for President? Ha.

  4. I don't get the sense he's positioning himself to be President. I think his goal is to be Governor.

Anyway, he's always come off as more style than substance, so even though I consider myself liberal, I'd probably vote for a moderate Republican over Newsom.

    1. yes of course he wants to be governor...as a stepping stone to higher office. He'll have to run over Ann Gust brown to do it, which will be impossible.

  5. I've heard many in the Gay community directly fault him for Prop 8 passing. It was failing in the polls until supporters started running his sound bites in their ads.

You can be sure those sound bites will make it into ads in conservative states, should he decide to run.

He would also have to deal with people not wanting to vote for him because he is Catholic, with people worrying that the Vatican will have influence over the U.S. government.

    1. Since he is an ardent supporter of marriage rights for gays, I don't think anyone would have to worry about undue influence from the Vatican. Au contraire. Use your head.

    2. I did not say that was *my* opinion that the Vatican would have influence. I don't vote for people based upon religion. There were people that would not vote for Romney, though, solely based upon his LDS membership. There were concerns about JFK's religion, as well.

    1. While that's a particular reason specifically as to why I would never vote for Gavin Newsom for POTUS. There are far, far too many reasons why I won't give Newsom another vote of mine. #1 He is an empty suit, imho.

  7. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein aren't going to be around forever. It would be wise for one (or both) of them to think about making sure they are succeeded by a Dem.

  8. He shouldn't run and unlikely to win because of his dishonesty--remember the affair he had with friend's wife.

  9. I wonder if Kimberly Guilfoyle is regretting her divorce. If Rich's supposition is correct, she could have been First Lady.

    1. When I watch her on Faux news I'm amazed she was ever married to Newsom. Not that I'm praising Newsom but she is revolting!

    2. She's really fell in line with the other Fox femmes, hasn't she? She probably wishes she could have dyed her blonde to fit in better.

    3. You beat me to this. And I would add,she went overboard on the lip plumping. From perfect lips to those throw pillows. Vanity did it to her.

  12. Don't blame Newsom for the Niners moving to Santa Clara. He had been in talks with Jed York and they had planned to sit down and go over the alternatives in SF when one day, York's office called Newsom to let him know that the Niners were moving to the south bay. It totally shocked Newsom, who had been led to believe that SF had as good a chance as the south bay of keeping the Niners. York was never interested in an alternative stadium in SF though, because a Santa Clara stadium would mean more money for his coffers, and also it would be conveniently right across the street from the Niners' practice facilities near Great America.

    1. That's all true, but I think Newsom felt blindsided because he took York for granted. Both of them didn't like each other, and it led to a useless stadium being built in the wrong place.

      I blame both.

    2. Doctor York had been talking to Kevin Moore, a former City Council member in Santa Clara 2 years prior to announcing the move to Santa Clara. Kevin Moore even admitted this on KPIX 5, during the run up to the 49ers being in the Super Bowl, that he asked ownership, "you might want to think about building a stadium in SC."

The York Ownership was never an honest broker in wanting to keep the 49ers in the City of SF. The Yorks hometown is "Youngstown Ohio," not SF, then their home away from home is Santa Clara, California.

  13. Good points 1:57 am. I will add to it by saying this: I think if Eddie D, and not Jed York was running the show today, the Niners would never abandon SF for the south bay. While people will show up for Niners games, they have trashed their long time fan base and turned off thousands of loyal, long time season ticket holders. They will get new ones in the south bay, but loyalty to a geographical area has never been a high mark among owners of any sports team. Just look at former owners like the Dodgers' Walter O'Malley, the Raiders' Al Davis, or Bob Irsay of the Colts. Jed York and his parents are no unfortunately different.

    1. @10:06AM...Geez I wish that Rich would add the "thumbs up" feature to his website, because I would give you one!

True, what you said, the Yorks have burnt far too many bridges in the City of SF, to be a viable part of the City anymore. So as of 2014, the 49ers will be San Francisco "in name only." This is truly a sad ending to such an historical NFL Franchise that has been in SF since 1946.

And Btw....The Yorks are not very well liked at all with Elected Officials, or the residents of SF. Yeah, Mayor Lee grins, & smiles in young Jed's face, but meh...
