Gary Radnich Just Said on KNBR That New Spurs Coach Becky Hammon 'Can't Relate' To NBA Guys; UPDATE: KNBR Omits 9 AM Hour/Radnich's Words

Gary Radnich just stuck his foot in his mouth.

Radnich essentially said that Becky Hammon, the woman coach just hired by the San Antonio Spurs wasn't worthy of the job.

I'm paraphrasing, but Radnich basically said that women coaches; no matter how revered; no matter how much respected like Hammon, for example, can't relate, (Raddy's words), to present day, modern-era athletes. They can't coach men. Also Radnich's words.

Keep in mind that Hammon was hired by Spurs coach, Gregg Popovich, hardly a guy who's been accused of creating PR stunts. Popovich knows what he's doing--he just won his fifth NBA Championship-- and was very high on Hammon's work tenure.

Radnich is entitled to his misogynist opinion. He's pretty backward in this area. Too bad his KNBR colleagues didn't call him out. Well, they tried to; a little late to the party anyway.

When Radnich strays off into areas beyond the toy department and delves into deep social thought and process he tends to come off as an old, white-male boot. I won't say what I truly believe Radnich was saying because he didn't say it, but he might as well have.

It's a black and white issue if you know what I mean and I'm sure you do.

UPDATE: 12: 07 PM PT: KNBR traditionally places interviews and content on its podcast pages--it has curiously OMITTED the 9 AM hour of its "Gary and Larry" Show.

We're not surprised. But we're not stopping either. Perhaps KNBR will have a change of heart, gees I wonder why this hour was omitted --Oh, never mind.

  1. Will be interesting how the players respond to her coaching.

  2. Interesting. Saw a report on ESPN today how she became friends with Tony Parker and Tim Duncan at 2008 All-Star game. They also had a quote from player, Jeff Green, how great she was. Also, do you think Greg Popovich would hire someone who wasn't qualified? He's a hall of fame coach.

He must be trying to cause talk because everything I've seen says she's great.

  3. I was listening to Radnich today and heard what he said on this subject.

Sadly, Lieberman is twisting Radnich's words and paraphrasing what Radnich actually said to come up with a provocative blog item. Lieberman's characterization is inaccurate.

Rich, if you can't post the entire statement ,don't cherry pick a few word OUT OF CONTEXT.

    1. I heard what he said too, verbatim and it's on tape if/when KNBR releases the tape on its podcast website as it traditionally does...

RADNICH: "In my opinion, she can't relate to 'NBA guys"--

      That's now "twisting"--that's HIM and it's DIRECT.

Maybe you're either a KNBR intern or a Radnich apologist.

    2. I recorded it, Rich. KNBR doesn't post full shows on their site, just interviews. Here's a transcript:

Radnich: "But I think men should coach men, and women should coach women. See, I don't like Geno Auriemma yelling at a woman. I still think, to me, coaching is getting the most out of somebody. And, I can't relate to a woman. Or if I was coaching high school or 8th grade, I have a hard time relating to a little girl. ... Tara VanDerveer has told me herself on numerous occasions she doesn't think she can coach a mens team. And it wasn't about Xs and Os -- of course, they know the stuff as good if not better than the men. But at the professional level, you're talking about the best players in the world ... I don't think a woman could ever be a head coach in the NBA. ... To me coaching, at the very least half of it if not more, is just understanding your players. Understanding what motivates you ... I've got a better chance of motivating Larry because I think I know a little bit what he's thinking because we're two males."

  5. Say what the "haters" may say, but intriguing, compelling radio would create the perfect opening for Kate Scott on this issue. This would be the absolute perfect time for Kate to not mince word, but put on on her big girl panties, put aside scores and traffic not once, but once an hour, and tell Radnich to go Eff himself and stick buy it. Embarrass the SOB on air and see what happens against "the star."

It may cost a visit to Lee Hammer's office, but so what? She won't get fired, that's for damn sure and, yet, it would pluse Gary in his place in what could be a dazzling sense of independence and change for women.

I would turn KNBR up real loud to hear it, just to hear Gary step all over his tongue to see Kate stand up to him -- like her or not.

Radnich is a prick and a know-mothing sports mouth anyway. It would deflate his ego a bit and, yet, be precedent.

I hope he shoves it down his throat.

Extra freebie catered lunch if she does what she should. That would be sports "leadership" that would make headlines.

That's called "gravitas" and real "balls". Go for it, Kate. You don't get chances like this but once in a great while and he certainly deserves it.

    1. Problem of not editing here. Meant to say, "It would put Gary in his place." Sorry.

Also "I hope she shoves it down his throat." Thanks.

    2. it's all possible that Kate 1) didn't disagree or 2)not to speak up because it would create more listeners tomorrow.

We've had Cari Champion sit silent two weeks ago when SAS said some women provoke abuse. Champion could have defended women nationwide but that show is so rehearsed Cari knew to leave it alone and let it pericolate.

    3. Scott said she disagreed with Gary's view ... and politely thanked him for expressing it. That was basically it.

She always plays it safe because she has aspirations of finding better media work. Creating enemies and baggage will stunt her potential upward mobility. She also doesn't seem to have much of a personality or unique life experiences.

  6. "I'm paraphrasing,"

There's your problem, Rich. Use exact quotes or don't bother.

Ex: I'm paraphrasing, but Radnich essentially referred to Rich Lieberman as donkey fucking hack.

    See what I mean?

  7. He's "entitled to his misogynist opinion?" Give me a BREAK. You hear women say, non-stop, how they want women in politics, women as their doctors, etc., because they can relate to one another and understand their "issues." There is NOTHING misogynistic about saying a woman coach can't relate to men in the NBA. Stop making this sound like a big deal when it's not. At all. So sick and tired of this phony, Bay Area mentality of freaking out over the tiniest of non-issues. Radnich is exactly right - a woman coach CAN'T relate to GUY PLAYERS in the NBA. Much like a guy can't relate to having monthly cramps. There are certain things that men relate better to men with, women to women with...and this is one of them. Stop acting like such a PC baby, Rich. For someone who flexes his keyboard muscles non-stop, you're acting like a total pandering baby.

    1. Really now , then why did someone so respected and storied like a multiple-champion coach like Gregg Popovich hire this woman? Was it a stunt? I mean, according to you, " a woman coach can't relate to GUY PLAYERS in the NBA"--you sir/madam are an A-Grade MORON.

    2. The Spurs are probably the most no-nonsense franchise in pro sports, except if you call hiring International players, coaches and women as radical. I think the Spurs 20 year record stands up to any scrutiny.

      Delete
    3. 11:43 AM, "can't relate" isn't the same as "hard to relate." Sure, a male ex-pro can better relate to other male pros. But obviously white, unathletic men have been able to effectively coach black professional players. So the idea that a woman "can't" relate enough to professional players to competently coach them smacks of misogyny when it comes from the mouth of a 65-year-old philanderer.

  8. You'd have to ask Gregg Popovich. And I am not a SIR, sir. I am a woman. And I find the word 'misogynistic' totally overused and knee-jerk.

    1. Yeah, really? Here's straight from the NY Times, USA Today, SB Nation, Gregg Popovich:

""I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff," said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. "Having observed her working with our team this past season, I'm confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs."

So, really, MISS, you really should know what you write before you write like a moron.

  9. NBA teams can hire men or women as their coaches and it won't matter. The players don't listen to any of their coaches anyway.

  10. I think what Gary is trying to say is that a female coach may be less likely to cover up for the prima donna's many transgressions on the road (i.e. "relate" to them).

  11. I've heard Radnich say " I have a mind of a woman" And that woman must be Phyllis Schafly. He's opposed woman in Boxing,Football, and any other contact sport you can think of.
He's a liver spotted anachronism, and the reason I missed hearing this is because his show has become dull. Its not enough to say he loves the Dodgers-or woman should stay in the kitchen) for me to stay tuned.
One more example..he said it many times..and right to her,but Radnich feels that Pete Wilson was the best anchor KRON ever had,not Pam Moore. Pete was the anchor who had a radio show and said something about gays being allowed to marry is the end of society...
Woman cant coach men or read a teleprompter as good as a man is how he feels I guess.

  12. I imagine the the new Spurs coach will relate to the players as well if not better than Jeff Van Gundy, Eric Musselman, and any other coach who is shorter than 5'9" and never played a day of pro basketball in their life. She at least paid basketball at very high levels and I am sure the X's and O's do not contain male anatomy on them.

  15. Rich is right - despite his foibles. What chickenshit. No first hour on the podcast for people to 1) hear and 2) allowed to form their own opinion. No, covering up via Fatrich and Hammer just sweeps it under the rug. This wouldn't happen if Bruno was hired for The Game. He'd rip Gary to shreds either before Radsnot got on the air or before he did.

  21. All of this is BULL. I'm hard on Rich sometimes, but in this case he's 100% correct. Radnich went on a rant and sounded like an idiot. KNBR attempted to cover it up and made sure no one could list to a replay of what he said. Funny how Radnich hates Damon Bruce...sounds like they have a lot in common when it comes to their opinion of women.

  22. I couldn't sleep last night and happened to turn to yesterday's Radnich show replayed on Comcast. He kept burying himself as his co-hosts debated his point of view. Funny thing, it was Gary's male co-host that debated him rather than his female partner. Maybe she wanted to get out of the way or didn't want to gang up on Radnich. I dunno.

  23. Who cares what Gary Radnich says or does, he's irrelevant. "It's too bad you have a "Hard-on for him"
