Woodson on KNBR Last Night

From a reader:

"Ray Woodson (on last night) had a bitter tone to his show, criticism of Lee Hammer and saying that he wants the sportsphone gig (post fp,) but that Hammer has other ideas and would go 'on the cheap'.  After probably his third snark remark,(re: hammer) he joked, in an effort to soften his criticism, that "this might be my last show on the station"

  1. I disagree with the above post. He did say it would be a nice gig to have and indeed Lee had him work this week (wed-fri) and he is in all next week as well so maybe this is his shot for the job. I don't think Ray was being overly negative towards Hammer in the least and the post above above makes it seem like that is all he talked about. For the most part it was very positive.

During the show almost every caller said Ray was doing a great job and in response Ray was being really modest about it and was just thankful for the opportunity. Ray is a no nonsense guy and although he plays sidekick to Gary he has the smarts to do a great job and carry a show on his own, case in point the Cody Ross interview was really good.

  2. Ray Woodson,I think everybody pretty much agrees ,is the voice of reason at KNBR. I sense he's liberal but avoids any of that getting on air. No surprise he's gotten wiff of who's next and why.
Lee Hammer is a despicable human being, and its easy to predict what's going through his mind-just think money and what would Dick Cheney do?
And for his best man at his wedding,Gary Radnich,go public with any complaints should Ray be let go? No chance. Look out for no.1 is always on Radnich's mind. He no doubt would convince himself that the grea leader is wise and thereby agree with Ray's demise as "best for the team"

  3. When Larry Krueger was let go, didn't Radnich defend him on the air, and rip (maybe mildly) Felipe Alou, and by extension, KNBR?

I think Ray Woodson is great, but I'm not sure he has a strong-enough personality to carry a show. He comes across as awfully nice, and somewhat bland, which makes for a great neighbor, but doesn't necessarily translate into great radio. I think he and Radnich do a nice job of playing off of each other, but maybe I'm in the minority.

  5. DodgerDog, you are not in the minority. Ray is too nice for primetime. I do think he is a great fill in host. Krueger was the best 'Sportsphone' host & Damon was great too. They need someone with some edge & entertaining who is not scared to critcize the local teams. I don't know about Byrnes. I think they can do better. They should not rush into hiring anyone. Chris Townsend would be the perfect replacement, but looks like he has the A's gig.

  6. I think the A's talk would be an easy gig to leave. And since his nighttime show is not aired due to the pathetic state of KTRB 860 (going dark at 5pm) he could jump at it.

Speaking of that Rich, any update on the KTRB situation?
